[edit] History
The Physics department dates back to the department of Natural Philosophy and Mathematics established in 1854 within the faculty of arts. In 1891 the department of Physics split from the department of Natural Philosophy and Mathematics and wealthy philanthropist William Christopher Macdonald provided funding for a Physics Building and for the creation of the Macdonald Chair in Physics. Between 1898 and 1907 Ernest Rutherford, conducting his ground breaking research in the department, established a McGill tradition for excellent research in Physics.
