The McGhee family, as an officially recognised sept of Clan Mackay, may wear the Mackay tartan. The motto of the family reads: "Quae Sursum Volo", which translated from Latin means, "I want that which is above/heavenly things."[citation needed]
Furthermore, as a sept of Clan McKay, the McGhees have adopted 'Manu Forti' as a Clan motto. 'Manu Forti', translated from the Latin, means 'With A Strong Hand.'[citation needed]
The family seat of the McGhees was in Galloway where the Lords of Balmaghie resided. All McGhees are descended from Gilbert M'Gy, First Lord of Balmage (1370 - 1426). The direct line of the Lords of Balmaghie came to an end when the estates were sold by the heir in the nineteenth century. Note that McGhee can also be spelt McGee, McGie, McGhie, Magee, M'Gie, and people bearing these surnames are all almost certainly inter-related.[citation needed]
A branch of the McGhee family settled in Falkirk in the 20th century, and a street is named after them there, McGhee Place.[citation needed]
The only peer with the surname is The Hon. Lord McGhie, Chairman of the Scottish Land Court and President of the Lands Tribunal for Scotland.[citation needed]
