This article needs work. It would look much better as an image or table or something.

I think it'd be cool if you coould put all of Marty's relatives in his chart. -Mitchell

[edit] Arthur and Sylvia McFly

Where exactly in the movie are George McFly's parents mentioned? I can't find it. It would be good to add details to the reference. -- Ritchy 19:47, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

  • They aren't mentioned in the movie. It's in the novelization. -- Riffsyphon1024 04:37, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ellen Baines, the "Unknown Child"

In an early script draft for movie two, in a 1967 scene, Ellen Baines is seen as the sixth unnamed Baines child. Should she be added?

Do you have a source backing that up? -- Ritchy 16:09, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
As a matter of fact, I do. Click beleow; you'll find the dnner scene on page 90.

Wow, that script is very different from the final BTTF. I'll confess I'm having a little trouble following it, but it seems clear Ellen is not the youngest child. Mid-page 91, it reads

Sally is 19, Toby is 17, and Ellen is 11. Linda's in a high chair next to Lorraine, Dave's on her other side, and there's one empty place.

Clearly, Ellen is not the youngest, since Linda is in a high chair. Kids over 11 years old do not sit in high chairs. -- Ritchy 16:48, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

On another note, the "unknown" in the Baines family tree refers to the fact that Stella was pregnant in 1955, not to an unnamed child seen onscreen. So really, the only way the previous script would be relevant in that context is if it has a line where Stella says what name she picked for her unborn child. -- Ritchy 22:14, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Uh, WHAT do these responses even MEAN??? Ellen is the youngest BAINES CHILD. Linda is her niece, and Stella's grandchild. Ellen is the youngest CHILD of Sam and Stella Baines!

[edit] Animated series

Can anyone find out who voiced the Animated Series family members? I looked around, and I can't find the information. For this series, imdb only has the list of regular voices, not the guest stars. -- Ritchy 18:20, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dave, Linda, Marlene and Marty Jr

Can these characters be put back onto the "Other Characters" page complete with the photos, infoboxes and details? The present articles about them have very little about them compared to what was there before. I appreicate there was a lot of speculation which can be removed, but there are some other details which can be added to their articles.

It would also put them on a par with Mr Strickland et al on the "Minor Characters" page - at the moment Marshall Strickland, who was in Part III for just one scene, has more details on him than Marty Jr does, and he was a key character in the first part of Part II. The entries on this page can then have a "Main article" referring to the other page.

I just find it a bit odd to split the minor characters page into two, and let some minor characters have quite detailed information whilst others have just a couple of lines. Marty Jr can be added to the "Minor Characters" page rather than have his own page once again, but I propose that he, Marlene, Dave and Linda be added back to the "Minor Characters" page (with their photos) and have all the minor characters together. This page should, in my opinion, be mainly the McFly family tree with a few short notes on the AS characters, and links to the main articles for the film's major (eg Marty) and minor (eg Dave) characters.

There's really not that much to say about them. Dave, Linda and Marlene are only seen in passing in a handful of scenes. And though Marty Jr plays an important role in the first half of Part II, very little is learned about him; really, all we know is what is directly relevant to Marty's mission.
There are a lot of details that could be said about them. However, that doesn't mean they have to be said. I refer you to WP:NOT#INDISCRIMINATE: Just because a fact is 100% true doesn't mean it has to be included in Wikipedia. To be included, a fact should also be important. Take for example, from Marty Jr's old page, the fact that he wears his pants inside-out and his jacket has a broken sleeve. That's true, but... so what? Does this gives us any important information about Marty Jr, the McFly family, or in any way contribute to our understanding of the movie? It does not. It's only unimportant trivia. It's on par with, say, including information about the colour of the tie Bush was wearing in the State of the Union article. While factual, it contributes nothing to our understanding of the topic at hand.
Of course, it is possible that some important fact is missing from the current article. Feel free to add them - but remember to include a reference and to avoid original research! However, I don't think we should split family members onto another page just yet. Rather, we should add information on this page, and when one family member's section grows to a respectable size, then it can be split on another page.
As for the minor characters page, I really don't think it's a model we should follow. This page gives a ridiculous amount of details (it practically retells the scenes of each character), along with a dose of speculation and absolutely no references. It really needs to be cleaned up.
--Ritchy 16:17, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Which articles are these exactly? - Denny 16:24, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Before all the information on the minor McFly family was merged in this page, there was this page for Marty Jr. and this page for other McFly family members. As you can see, these pages are unreferenced and written with a in-universe perspective that is inadequate for Wikipedia. They also include a lot of trivial details and a heavy dose of speculation. I salvaged what I could and included it in the current McFly family page. -- Ritchy 16:54, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
Gotcha... good call on merging/redirecting those. - Denny 16:58, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks! :) -- Ritchy 17:06, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] format

Revert my recent format changes if you like, but I'm pretty sure what I have done will make it look better for your GA review. You will still have a problem where a family member's only info is see main article. For these you should write a short summary of the most important points about that character. Good luck. ike9898 17:38, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

What are the advantages of your change? I see several problems. Without subsections, wikilinking to individual family members is no longer possible. I for one find the list less readable: it makes it look like a long block of text with no clear divisions. It also introduces a strange difference between character entries that are all in one line, and the character entries that are in two lines (the "see main article" ones). The only advantage I find is the shorter table of contents, and that's secondary at best. So I'd like to know, how does this change help with our GA review? -- Ritchy 18:44, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
I've restored the "unnecessary" text you had removed from the "family tree" section. The alternative you proposed was to have a section composed of only one image and no explanation whatsoever, which is not really acceptable IMO. -- Ritchy 19:01, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
No offense intended, but I reverted your changes. I just don't see any real advantage to them, and I've explained the problems they cause. If you can point out to me the reasons I missed that justify them, I would be open to re-reverting them. -- Ritchy 19:09, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] GA Question

I was going to see about reviewing this article, but I have a question, why do several of the characters have no text in their section and just a link to their main articles? It looks like there could validly be some content derived from those articles. Homestarmy 14:37, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] GA Failed

This article has failed the GA noms as it seems to have a very in-universe perspective. It also looks very much like a list and it has a few stubby sections. If you believe that this review was in error feel free to take it to WP:GA/R. Tarret 20:40, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Marty 1985.JPG

Image:Marty 1985.JPG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:51, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
