McFarlane Sports Picks

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

McFarlane's Sports Picks is the name given to the line of sports-related action figures released by McFarlane Toys, a company founded by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane. The figures feature lifelike renderings of select stars in the five most popular sports in North America - baseball, football, hockey, basketball and stock car racing. The company has official licensing rights to the major professional leagues of all of these sports.

[edit] Beginnings

An avid sports fan, collector of sports memorabilia and part-owner of a professional hockey team (the Edmonton Oilers), Todd McFarlane created McFarlane's Sports Picks in 2001 with the release of a series of NHL hockey players. The figures were licensed by the NHLPA but not by the league itself; as such, the players' jerseys featured the colours of the teams for which they played, but the NHLPA logo in place of the team logos (which the NHL holds rights to).

The figures proved to be popular enough with fans and collectors that the NHL - and later the NFL - signed a licensing agreement with McFarlane, allowing future releases to be branded with league and team logos.

Later in 2001, McFarlane's Sports Picks released Series 1 of their NHL line, and Series 1 & 2 of their NFL line.

The figures were available only in Canada, however the McFarlane Toys Collectors' Club allowed limited numbers of the figures to be released in the United States. The Patrick Roy figure and blue jersey Sakic were exclusive to Wal-Mart while the Mark Messier and white jersey Sakic were exclusive to other retailers such as Toys R Us, Real Canadian Superstore, Loblaws etc.

Series 11 (2005)
Series 11 was another series released exclusively to Canadian retailers.

  • Peter Forsberg (2), Philadelphia Flyers
  • Paul Kariya (2), Nashville Predators

Series 13 (2006)

  • Dany Heatley, Ottawa Senators
  • Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers
  • Bryan McCabe, Toronto Maple Leafs - The chase figure has Bryan without a helmet sporting his mohawk, Bryan's figure is the first in the NHL series to have a no helmet chase (similar to the NFL series.)
  • Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals
  • Alex Tanguay, Calgary Flames - Tanguay was first announced when he was playing for the Colorado Avalanche but during the off season, Alex joined the Calgary Flames. With prototype photos shown of him in his Avalanche uniform, TMP managed to make that version the chase figure.
  • Joe Thornton (2), San Jose Sharks

  • Surprise Figure: Henrik Sedin, Vancouver Canucks

- The Sedin figures are insert figures that never made an appearance in any of the original lineups so they take the pose of an existing figure that closely represents their playing style (just like the NFL Series 11 Jason Elam figure which used Adam Vinatieri's pose). Both Daniel and Henrik share the pose of Rick Nash in their navy jerseys. Henrik was released in the West and Daniel in the East.

Wayne Gretzky is featured in his Legends series 1 Kings pose, a new pose in an Oilers uniform in both white and blue (Wal-Mart Exclusive) as well as in his Team Canada uniform Red and White (Wal-Mart Exclusive). Later on, Mcfarlane produced the two Stanley cup figures in this scale, Steve Yzerman (2) which featured a new head sculpt and Martin Brodeur (2).
  • Team Canada - McFarlane Toys celebrated Team Canada's gold medal win at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City with two four-pack sets (Set 1: Chris Pronger, Curtis Joseph, Steve Yzerman, Mario Lemieux; Set 2: Eric Lindros, Martin Brodeur, Joe Sakic, Paul Kariya). The Vancouver Canucks set features captain Markus Naslund (1), Roberto Luongo (2) and veteran Trevor Linden. All of these figures are up-scale versions of existing 6" figures of these players.
  • 3-Inch Series - 3" high figures debuted in 2004. These are sold in twin-packs and feature down-scale versions of existing 6" figures. Featured combinations are Rice/Pennington, Favre/Brady, McNabb/Emmitt Smith, Shockey/Ray Lewis, Harrison/Holmes, Alstott/Ricky Williams, Vick/Alexander, Urlacher/McAllister, Randy Moss/Bledsoe, Favre (2)/Gonzalez, Garcia/Owens, and Delhomme/Faulk. The 2007 3-inch set includes: Tom Brady (2), Plaxico Burress, Reggie Bush, Brett Favre(3), Terrel Owens(2) and LaDainian Tomlinson(2)- each one sold separately.
  • Twin Packs - The NFL line of McFarlane's Sports Picks features several figures sold in packs of two. Many times, an existing 6" figure will be teamed with another figure not available as a single sale. These two are often placed together in an action pose, such as a defender attempting to sack the quarterback. Combinations include: Brian Urlacher/Brett Favre, Rich Gannon/Derrick Brooks, Ed McCaffrey/Zach Thomas, Donovan McNabb/Michael Strahan, Clinton Portis/Ray Lewis, Peyton & Eli Manning, Michael Vick/Brian Dawkins and Deion Sanders/Jerry Rice.
  • 3-Packs - The NFL line expanded to 3-packs in 2006 with 4 teams each getting one. The three pack includes either three reissued figures from the same team or in some cases two reissued figures with a third that is brand new and unavailable as a single sale. Combinations include: Dallas Cowboys 3-Pack (Drew Bledsoe, Julius Jones, & Roy Williams), New England Patriots 3-Pack (Tom Brady (2), Corey Dillon, & Tedy Bruschi), New York Giants 3-Pack (Tiki Barber (2), Michael Strahan, & Plaxico Burress), Pittsburgh Steelers 3-Pack (Ben Roethlisberger, Hines Ward (2), & Joey Porter), Philadelphia Eagles 3-Pack (Brian Westbrook, Donovan McNabb & Brian Dawkins), Dallas Cowboys Quarterback 3-Pack (Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman & Tony Romo), Runningback 3-Pack (LaDainian Tomlinson, Shaun Alexander & Larry Johnson) & San Francisco 49ers 3-Pack (Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott & Jerry Rice) - one was a retail release with all figures in red jerseys and another was released as a collector's club exclusive in all white jerseys.
  • Other Figures - As well as his twin-pack figure (in which he is depicted in his Dallas Cowboys uniform), Deion Sanders has had four figures released in both home and away colours of his other two teams, the Atlanta Falcons and Baltimore Ravens (all four of these figures are the same pose, only the uniforms change) ... former Denver Broncos tight end Shannon Sharpe has been released in two figures, both the modern and retro Broncos uniforms (again, repaints of the same sculpt) ... Clinton Portis was depicted in his 2004 Pro Bowl uniform; this figure was produced in limited numbers and sold only through Portis' official web site ... Cleveland Browns running back William Green was released as a special issue, depicted in the Browns' alternate (orange) jersey, to commemorate the 2003 Pro Football Hall of Fame class ... New York Giants running back Tiki Barber was first released as a figure in 2003 at that year's National Sports Collectors Convention ... [edit] MLBPA Figures (2000)

  • Barry Bonds, Home (white), variant: Big League Challenge (blue)
  • Chipper Jones, Home (white), variant: Big League Challenge (red)
  • Manny Ramírez, Alternate Home (blue), variant: Big League Challenge (red)
  • Alex Rodriguez, Road (grey), variant: Big League Challenge (blue)
  • Sammy Sosa, Road (grey), variant: Big League Challenge (blue)
  • Mark McGwire, Home (white), variant: Big League Challenge (red)

NOTE: The first series of MLB McFarlane figures were licensed by the MLBPA but not by the MLB proper. As such, no figure sported MLB logos but rather the players last name across the chest and last initial on the batting helmet. However, each was painted to match the color scheme of the team for which they played at the time (Giants, Braves, Indians, Mariners, Cubs, and Cardinals respectively). In addition, a variant of each figure was also painted in the uniform which the player wore during the initial revival of the Big League Challenge. These variant figures were not released with the initial wave, but rather were unloaded several years later at bargain prices to various retailers. Player scuplts were later reused (with the exception of McGwire who retired following the 2001 season) in the subsequent releases of each as MLB licensed figures. A second wave of figures was planned to be released and included Mike Piazza, José Canseco, McGwire 2, Nomar Garciaparra, Jason Giambi, and Shawn Green. This plan was scrapped, however, once McFarlane obtained the rights to MLB licensed figures.

  • Jeff Bagwell, Houston Astros, Regular: Alt. Home (red), Chase: Alt. Home (white)
  • John Smoltz, Atlanta Braves, Regular: Home (white), Chase: Road (grey)

  • Surprise Figure: Pat Burrell, Big League Challenge (red)
  • Surprise Figure: Troy Glaus, Big League Challenge (red)
  • Surprise Figure: Alex Rodriguez, Big League Challenge (blue)

NOTE: Due to the fact that Richie Sexson had signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks by the time that his figure was released, his regular figure is considered a retro and, although included in the regular assortment, was short printed. A similar situation occurred with the Kevin Brown figure. However, his signing with the New York Yankees was early enough to allow a mid-run revision of the figure. Supposedly, the Dodgers and Yankees versions were produced in equal quantities.

Series 9 (2004)

  • Rafael Palmeiro, Baltimore Orioles, Regular: Alt. Home (black), Chase: Retro Texas Rangers Home (white)
  • Surprise Figure: Miguel Tejada (Update), Baltimore Orioles, Home (white)

NOTE: Series 10 represented a change in the production of "Retro" figures. Up to series 9, all "Retros" were packaged with unique artwork dissimilar to that of the overall series and/or released in a series subsequent to the initial release of a figure. Beginning with series 10's Pettitte and Palmeiro "Retros" began to be looked at by McFarlane more as chase pieces than surprise figures and thus "Retros" released in the same series as the initial production of a piece were packaged with artwork which reflected the regular series counterparts. Thus, the Yankees Pettitte and Rangers Palmeiro are considered chases and not surprise figures.

  • Andy Pettitte, New York Yankees, Home (white)

NOTE: The regular Albert Pujols figure initially lacked the World Series logo on the right sleeve. It was corrected mid-run to be included. It is unsure what ratio of error to corrected were made. However, versions with (corrected) and without (error) the World Series logo can be found. Additionally, variant versions of the error regular Pujols have been found which include a blue wrist band on the left arm.

NOTE: Cases later in the print run contain versions of the Daisuke Matsuzaka chase that have a 2007 World Series patch added to both the hat and right sleeve. Additionally, the patch was added erroneously to the hat of the white figure in these cases (Matsuzaka only pitched in road greys in the 2007 World Series) so that versions with and without patch exist in the regular and chase versions of Matsuzaka.

[edit] Unreleased Figures

  • Barry Bonds (2), San Francisco Giants Alt. Home (black) - Originally planned as a second chase figure for MLB Series 5, this figure was never officially inserted into cases. However, at least two packaged samples have leaked to the public with one sold on eBay and a second through private sale.
  • Miguel Tejada, Oakland A's, Home (White) - Originally planned as a second chase figure for MLB Series 5, this figure was never officially inserted into cases. However, an unknown number of packaged samples were leaked though the McFarlane internet store in a "Warehouse Find" special in which they were randomly inserted into cases containing various series.
  • José Canseco, Chicago White Sox, Road (grey) - This figure was originally planned and pictured as a part of MLB Series 3. However, Canseco retired following the 2001 season, thus removing himself from the MLBPA and cancelling the release of the figure. Whether packaged samples exist or not is unknown, but none have appeared for public sale. The sculpt was reused as Albert Pujols from MLB Series 1.
  • Richie Sexson, Milwaukee Brewers, Alt. Home (blue) - While pictured in the toy collectors magazine "Lee's Toy Review" as the regular figure, no package samples are known to exist. Richie Sexson's unclear contract status resulted in an early change in the status of his series 8 figure and, thus, it was short printed as a Brewers retro without addition of a Diamondbacks update.
  • Rickey Henderson, Oakland A's Home (white) - Scupted to be used as a future release and pictured as a teaser on the spawn.com message boards, this figure was put on hold and eventually cancelled when Henderson was unable to land on an MLB roster. It is unknown if packaged samples exist. The sculpt was eventually reused as Sammy Sosa 3 in the 2004 Sosa/Helton 2-pack.

[edit] Other NASCAR Figures

  • 12-Inch Series - 12" high (regular figures are 6") sculpts debuted in 2004. So far, only Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne have been released as 12" figures.
  • 3-Inch Series - 3" high figures debuted in 2005. These are sold individually and feature down-scale versions of existing 6" figures. Featured are Jeff Gordon, Dale Jarrett, Jimmie Johnson, Bobby Labonte, Richard Petty and Rusty Wallace.
  • Shrek 2 Two Packs - McFarlane capitalized on the release of the 2004 film, Shrek 2, featuring two different 2-figure packs with the two main characters from the film dressed in NASCAR race gear and standing beside the relevant driver. These packs were: Shrek with Bobby Labonte, and Donkey with Tony Stewart.
  • Other Figures - A special boxed set was released in 2004, featuring Dale Earnhardt dressed in his 2001 uniform, surrounded by the seven Winston Cup trophies he won during his career.

[edit] Chase figures

To increase the figures' appeal among collectors, McFarlane Toys issues rare alternately-painted versions of most figures, officially called Chases. Differences between the standard figure and the chase figure usually (but do not always) involve a change in the player's jersey color. Usually, this is a change from a home to an away jersey, or vice versa. A 'retro' chase, depicting a player in the colors of a team he formerly played for, are also sometimes released. Common figure versions are pictured on the back of the figure's packaging, while chase are not. This excludes the NHL series 2 Joe Thornton, Dominik Hasek, NFL 6's Rich Gannon, and NFL Series 11's Julius Jones.

Chase are shipped randomly in factory cases. Buyers looking to purchase specific chases (without having to sift through all of the figures on primary retail store shelves) can usually find them in select hobby stores, on eBay or at collectors' websites. Depending on the figure and the rarity of the chase (ie, the number of units produced), some can fetch up to ten times the retail price of the common figure.

The list below is incomplete but designed to merely list some chase figures which differ from the common figures in ways other than a simple change in jersey colour.

[edit] NASCAR Chases

Chases of Action McFarlane (NASCAR) figures, known as Specialty figures, include a winner's circle-style base and backdrop. These are also unique in that the mass-market figures had alcohol and tobacco advertising removed, while chase figures were authentic and are only sold through McFarlane Toys' website, Spawn.com, or through collectors' stores. They are not sold to buyers under 18 years of age.
