McCarthy Mor is a title claimed by numerous candidates over the years, and a subject of Pete McCarthy's book The Road to McCarthy.

Irish clans were organised around major families, and the Mc Carthys were part of the Clan Eoghanachta, and lesser families in their ranks were the Sullivans, Driscolls, Donoghues and Mc Donaghs, and the variants of those names.

Revivalists of Gaelic titles are trying to get a system of clan overlordship on a non terrototial basis restored, and effrts with the Genalogical Office in the Republic of Ireland has seen a number of titles awarded and some withrawn subsequently.
