[edit] Free images vs. corporate publicity shots.

Wikipedia's policies state that we do not use unfree images when free ones are available. Please don't replace free-licensed pictures with corporate publicity shots used under Fair Use, even if the publicity shot is "better", "more professional", etc. Thanks, Matthew Brown (Morven) (T:C) 16:29, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia, where the 'free' part refers to freedom as much if not more than 'no cost'. We do not have permission to use publicity shots in our encyclopedia. We could not, in most cases, obtain the permission we need - a wholly free license - from commercial entities. Therefore we could only use such shots without permission under the US legal doctrine of Fair Use, which is legally and morally questionable at times as well as being not particularly aiding in our goal of freedom.
So, despite any good intentions you may have had, uploading pictures you got from google image search is not helping us. If you think something needs to be better illustrated, try and get a photo yourself - or get someone to license it to us under terms we can use (e.g. GFDL, Creative Commons). I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
