Talk:May 2006 Java earthquake
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As is our habit with breaking news stories, there will be initial names and names it's moved to, etc. etc. My suggestion: 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake, since the quake happened very near the city, which is a rather major city. However, since it didn't happen RIGHT under (like the Bam and San Francisco earthquakes), I can see it staying at Java. I just wanted comments. --Golbez 09:04, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
- I suggest this stays here unless there's another such large quake in the region (heaven forbid). --Merovingian {T C @} 09:45, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

- Should more redirect pages be made for this topic then? When searching using commonly associated names, such as "Indonesia Earthquake", the page usually does not show up. Xspartachris 12:16, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Number of Deaths
I've read that according to official Indonesian ministry of social affairs information, the number of deaths is "at least" 2517; excluding people possibly burried under the debris.

AP article gives 3068 dead 16 hours after earthquake.
AP is now giving 3733 dead.
Fox News reported 2,700. Is this all speculation these sources are giving?--Hellogoodsir 14:25, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
AP attributes their number to government officials.
Um, ok. And if you could, please leave your signiture.--Hellogoodsir 18:03, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/5028500.stm - reports 200,000 homeless rather than 100,000 and 'at least 5,427 dead'.--Max Randor 09:55, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

A quick apology about removing the references section; it looked empty in the edit box, and I'm not familiar with them. --Merovingian {T C @} 09:27, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Adisutjipto Airport (WIIJ/JOG) Closure
Apparently, I heard from my parents in Jakarta (I'm in UK myself), that the airport is currently closed due to damage on the runway because of the recent earthquake. My cousin's flight was redirected to Solo International Airport (Adisumarmo). Can we add this to the article and possibly the Airport's article as well (if anybody heard the same thing, tell us)?--W Tanoto 20:02, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
- I read the same thing. The runway was apparently heavily cracked, making takeoffs or landing impossible.--Towedwart 20:08, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
-
- UPDATE: We have been informed by a relief volunteer with PMI that The airport in Yogyakarta has opened for Humanitarian Relief. He says that the government urges all to make use of this airport and to avoid using Solo as the road is congested and hampers relief efforts. More info here

[edit] Magnitude
USGS Latest Earthquakes in the World gives the magnitude as 6.3. Article reference 2 now also says 6.3 and gives location as 20km SSW of Yogyakarta. Also now gives epicenter as 7.977S 110.318E.
- The consensus in the seismological reports is on 6.3 Mw. I updated the article to reflect that yesterday. Any comments on why it was reverted? --rxnd ( t | € | c ) 08:25, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Vandalism
We're already getting cases of vandalism by twisted people. If this continues, the article will have to be protected (Yamauchi)
Larf, yea that's ridiculous. I'd just be Johnny on the spot about reverting unless it becomes too problematic.--Hellogoodsir 14:27, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Time of earthquake
I have changed the time of the earthquake to reflect the times reported by this USGS page. I have since noticed that the original times seem to be based on this BBC article, which, in turn, cites the USGS for these times. I am assuming that the GMT given by the BBC article is a typo. If anyone knows otherwise, feel free to correct.--GregRM 03:35, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
- Does anyone know if the local time is A.M. or P.M., if not, I'll go look it up...Freddy Jade 23:08, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- Well, it was AM (ie, around dawn), but the time here is listed in 24hour clock so no need to state AM or PM - ie, fine as it is. I remember clearly as I have family there and the calls and SMS came thru (to us in Sydney) saying there was an earthquake but family was all OK at about 10am our time (Sydney is 3 hours ahead) --Merbabu 23:45, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Money Donated
I heard on the BBC that the UK has promised £4 million after adding a further £1 million to the original £3 million which is stated in the article. source http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/5027698.stm --Max Randor 20:57, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
- I've put back in the ref you accidently took out, as well as expanding the one you added. (When taking/replacing out a <REF name=Blah> from a location, please find the next occurance of <Ref name=blah /> and put it in there, or else the reference is lost)
- As for the aid, it's looking quite complex now, would it be better to have this in a table/bulleted list? Regards, MartinRe 00:32, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Local Knowledge problems
It would seem that some media reports give a sense of tourist oriented places as being 'close', and more important than the local people's communities. This is misleading and does a disservice to the hundreds of thousands of Javanese who live in the region, and who are suffering. (1)Borobudur is on the plain of Kedu west of Gunung Merapi and is not "nearby" Yogyakarta and is quite a distance (over 50 km nnw of the epicentre of the earthquake) and the fatalities in the area around Borobudur are negligible compared to the Bantul area. (2)Prambanan is north east of Yogyakarta and is not "nearby" either. (3) The Royal Graveyard of Imogiri is extensively damaged - and is just east of Bantul. Not a mention anywhere in western wire reports. Detik online has some good photos showing why it has been closed. (4) Most maps of Southern Central Java available to tourists are grossly innacurate and should _not_ be heavily relied upon. Some of the best maps of the area used to be Dutch colonial maps from the 1930's. They are not easily available. IMHO edits that show lack of local knowledge should be argued out of the article in respect for the thousands of suffering javanese. SatuSuro 01:55, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Image:Blethrow_merapi1.jpg
Why is this image in the article if the earthquake wasn't caused by its activity? It doesn't seem relevant to me. --Merovingian {T C @} 03:07, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
- I agree, should be removed. --Merbabu 03:12, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] US dollars
Why are all the currencies indicated followed by US dollar equivalent? The US currency really has nothing to do with the event. NorthernThunder 03:29, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
- Because in todays world, the U.S dollar is the standard currency, and by converting the figures, one can more easily compare them. Iorek85 03:42, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
-
- I agree with Northern that the US currency is irrelevant. There was a similar debate during a Wikipedia foundraiser. I think it would be best to mention the money in that country's currency. Perhaps, at the end of that paragraph, we could list the total amount of money contributed by all countries in USD? Or in Euros? Acetic Acid 05:12, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Volunteers Needed
In response to the Java Quake of 27th May, 2006, the World Wide Help Group have set up the Java Quake Help Wiki (http://javaquake.worldwidehelp.info) in coordination with the Java Quake Help Blog (indonesiahelp.blogspot.com)(not in english) and since it was set up, in the past 24 hours we are coordinating disaster relief operations with major aid agencies and teams on the ground. There's also a team working with us in setting up sms relay communications into affected areas based on the previous relief efforts in the region.
The wiki has the basic design and structure in place but we URGENTLY NEED online volunteers to help us out with the wiki in terms of the following tasks:
1. Move relevant content from tsunamihelp ( tsunamihelp.info & quakehelp.asiaquake.org) 2. Scrape info from the blogs covering the quake on tehnorati 3 Post translations from helpjogja.net blog to the wiki (via Andy Carvin's link: toggletext.com) 4. Remove irrelevant info 5. Add static info on the main page 6) spread the word out about the wiki
.......etc.
We have been and are in touch with ICRC-Geneva, TSF & IFRC and are receiving important information such as assessments directly from them which shows that they recognize our relief efforts on the blog and wiki. Additionally, we are being provided with 24/7 info updates from aid workers and their teams in the field and are also blogging at World Wide Help ( blog.worldwidehelp.info). We been requested by a couple of NGOs to coordinate and communicate with them in publishing their situational reps on the wiki and blog.
Any help from all of you for the organization and management of content on the wiki is most appreciated. If you're interested in lending a hand please head over to the wiki or drop us a line to javaquake@worldwidehelp.info
Thanks,
Angelo on behalf of the World Wide Help Group.

- just a bit about the aid getting to people, relief flights have been landing at solo and Halim Perdana Kusuma airport, that aid is sitting in warehouses and is not being coodinate properly, there's lots of misccomunication right now.. lot of info belig flung around without a place thats collating/aggregating/updating it. Believe me you, that INGOs haven't yet put out a coordinated joint appeal on whats needed where, moreover there are relief volunteers on the ground who are relaying vital info to blogs but some aren't in english, the very info that NGOs and aid workers require.... if anyone could help out we'd really appreciate it. thanks. [edit] Change the disgusting remark about the UK releif!
As I was reading this article, I saw this line under the heading 'Response':
“United Kingdom is offering nothing, calling them 'dirty people'. Tony Blair spat at the Java embassador in London.”
Feeling quite disgusted with this sort of vandalism (I can’t believe that the person who wrote this has the right to abuse what is already a heartbreaking humanitarian disaster), I checked on the discussion pages and found that there is talk of vandalism on the wiki article.
I do not have time to do a researching on the relief effort from the UK and put in place of that sick remark (I have exams). If someone reads this, could they do some background info?
If no one changes the comment, I will do so tomorrow.
As a note to vandals, you are quite sick.
The One In Yellow - "Day One Will Suffice" 18:47, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
- In the time it took you to write this, you could have just removed the comment, I simply went back to a previous edit and copied the text that had been vandalised to fix it. Very simple and easy to do if you dont have much time. So it's all fixed. PS, i was disgusted by it as well. JonEastham 18:51, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
Someone was quick, that change occured whilst I typed! Thank you JonEastham :-) The One In Yellow - "Day One Will Suffice" 18:55, 31 May 2006 (UTC
- yeah mate, no need to get upset, just revert. If they can vadalise, you can fix it!! You got da power!!! Ask someone if you don’t know how. Yeah, you have to wonder just how pointless people must be if they can be bothered trying to spoil things for others. Cheers.--Merbabu 00:41, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
Somehow current events attract the one line wonders for the thrill of seeing their junk embedded in current stories, and consequently the dis-respect to the thousands of dead, and the tens of thousands of homeless, they get their thrill. Soon as you see it, revert the article, dont wait for anyone else!SatuSuro 00:35, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Location
The 2006 Java earthquake occurred ... around 25 km (15 miles) south-southwest of the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta, ... 17.1 km below the seabed, according to the U.S. Geological Survey; Jakarta's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency determined the hypocentre to be about 37 km south of Yogyakarta, 33 km below the seabed.
Are these talking about different things, or are the two agencies in disagreement? (Or have we made a mistake?). It would be nice not to have two such confusing sentences opening the article. HenryFlower 20:18, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
- There is a serious problem, with the info. Nothing to do with "nice" - someone needs to clean it up asap. (1) Epi or Hypo - as to whether they are different ways of indicating the calculated centre point of the earthquake (2) the first distance given from Yogya and the depth under the seabed are two separate points in space, whereas the second source gives a very different location. Anyone? SatuSuro 00:35, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
To confuse us further, the USGS link actually says: "Depth 10 km (6.2 miles) ... Distance 15 km (10 miles) S of Yogyakarta" with an uncertainty of +/- 8.1 km on the horizontal location [1]. HenryFlower 13:04, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Imogiri
Why has the link to Imogiri been removed?? It is a valid link and provides more information to people who may wonder what "Imogiri" is (like myself). I found the Imogiri article informative and it satisfied my request for information when i performed a separate search. If someone thinks something is wrong with the quality of the Imogiri article, then they should work to fix it.....don't remove a link simply because you think the references article isn't the best quality. 68.187.192.107 13:08, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
-
- Please elaborate. All I did was change Imogiri to Imogiri. Why was this link removed? 68.187.192.107 13:18, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
-
- Henry...I implore you to go back and review MY edits...those attributed to my IP address. You will find that it was a prior user who added the link to the blog....not me! All three of my edits were simply adding a link to Imogiri. Please go back and review for yourself. 68.187.192.107 13:50, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
-
- Henry...my original edit [3] included only the link to Imogiri. User Kungfuadam, in reverting a previous external link, also removed my internal link.[4] My attempts to restore my internal link inadvertently restored the external link entered by a prior user. I will re-add the link to Imogiri manually rather than reverting again. Please do not remove it.
—
- Begorrah ya arguing shanks! I started the Imogiri article yonks ago, and I hadnt even thought when I was putting a reference in for this art to put a link in :),
and I come across this argument. Having lived and cycled and motorcycled through the Bantul area extensively many years ago, and Imogiri area its bizarre to consider this! SatuSuro 01:00, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Tsunamigenic
I removed the latter part of this: "Coastal residents fled inland in fear of a tsunami, but such an event did not transpire since the magnitude was insufficient for the quake to be tsunamigenic." I don't think it is known that the magnitude of the earthquake was the limiting factor. With tsunamis factors such as vertical vs horizontal movement are more important than raw magnitude.
[edit] New Zealand
I believe NZ has also offered aide but don't have time to find the relevant info Nil Einne 17:32, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Move this page??
I propose we change the name (and move) this page to 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake particularly after today's earthquake in West Java/Pangandaran area. --Merbabu 12:43, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Number of houses destroyed and sources of info
I worked for an international NGO in Indonesia during this emergency and had access to a lot of current information. The numbers in the article currently, especially for number of houses destroyed and number of homeless are quite incorrect. I am going to correct this shortly. I just wanted to mention thouhg, that for almost any humanitarian disaster, ReliefWeb, run by the UN, provides all the situation reports produced, often daily, by NGOs, national governments, and the UN itself. Here you can find incredibly detailed information from Jogja (see this link for example [5], as it is produced. Currently the numbers are from a CNN article on the 6th of June, but they were substantially revised after that. And anyway, I wish we would start using better sources than newspaper articles - at least after the initial dust has settled and figures become more stable.
(I put this here because I think it's a very useful source for future emergencies. If anyone know where else to include it so future writers of emergencies can find it, let me know. Maybe we should have guides for how to research an emergency, a political event, a biography etc?) Houshuang 05:08, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
- In mid-December, 10 of us will be taking part in Habitat for Humanity's house building project in Yogjakarta. See www.habitat.org. There will be 4 adults and 6 teenaged students participating in this foundation building phase of the project. What I need to know is: Is the airport already open and is Garuda the only airline flying from Singapore to Yogjakarta?
