Mav, Please explain how the following are of minor historical value

  1. 1809 - Napoleon orders the annexation of the papal states to the French empire
  2. 1949 - Berlin Blockade is lifted by the Soviet Union
  3. 1949 - Canadian government recognises State of Israel
  4. 1973 - The Watergate scandal hearings are televised

  1. I couldn't confirm this at all after 10 minutes of searching.
  2. The blockade was lifted on May 12 (already listed there)
  3. Minor historical value unless Canada was the first nation to recognize Israel
  4. Minor historical value that I strongly suspect is wrong since I updated a day page in March (I think) which stated that televised hearings began. It is also vague ; literally all that it is saying is that hearings are on TV. So what? They were on TV for months.

Where was your source for all the events you added? I've found out the hard way that a good quarter to a third of the events listed on "this day in history" websites are somewhat to completely wrong or otherwise minor trivia. --mav

  1. Napolean...see [1] & [2], and it is significant
  2. You are correct. I was wrong. My source was Timeline of United States diplomatic history...which said it happened May 17. I have just changed it to read May 12.
  3. Truman was the first to recognize Israel. I can see your point
  4. The senate hearings began May 17, and they were televised from the start. [3] & [4], and this event is significant.

My source for the things I add to the date-articles is Wikipedia. I click on What Links to that day and started poking around. Sometimes, I have learned, I am misled by wrong information (see Timeline of United States diplomatic history above), but I also find some cool items like Antikythera mechanism. Fair enough - I partially stand corrected. It just takes one hell of a lot of time to confirm each and every entry so I do sometime delete false positives. I just don't want to spread false information around when I update every year page and most of the subject pages from information contained on these pages. --mav

I am glad we can have these discussions in mature manners. Kingturtle 03:09 19 May 2003 (UTC)

Saxophone's patent date must have been duplicated to May 17 and June 22. One should be fixed. --PuzzletChung

Yeah, mine too. You could have just been bold and added her yourself. However, I've done. —Wrathchild (talk) 16:01, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
