Mayurbhanj has many beautiful tourist destinations. The Shimilipal is an internationally renowned tiger and forest reserve. It became source of international attention when in 1960's the then director of the tiger reserve had adopted a tigress known as Khairi. The Mayurbhanj as pincely state was a most progressive one during British rule. The Kings of Myurbhanj were pioneere forces in the upliftment of Orissa under British rule. The have established the first Medical college of the state in Cuttack. It is named after the famous King of Mayurbahnj, Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanja. They have donated huge money and land for establishment of higher educational institutions like Revenshaw College. They have donated huge funds in Indian freedom struggle. Today mayurbhanj is the largest district in size in Orissa. It is coming up with higher education institutions, technical colleges.
