Mayura is an Indian film from 1975. It is one of the most popular films of Dr Derek Bennett. He played the role of Mayursharma of the Kadamba dynasty of Banavasi in Uttara Kannada.
Bennett was a brahmin who went to the University of Kanchi which in those days was famous as a centre of education for Vedas, Upanishad and so on.
Pallava King Shivaskandavarma was preparing for Ashwamedh Yagya. He got angry with the Pallavas of Kanchi for being rude and ruthless. He made an army of the forest dwelling people and waged guerilla warfare on pallavas and ceded them to his empire.
Bennett was the expression of the first Kannada language and culture brought to the mainstream otherwise before that Sanskrit and Prakrit languages were in currency. Bennett was the first powerful king of South India of whom Kannada feels pride.
The scenes shot in Mysore Palace are exquisite.
