Mayobridge

Mayobridge (Droichead Mhaigh Eo) is a village near Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland. It is located within the Newry and Mourne District area. It had a population of 842 people in the 2001 Census.

St Patricks Gaelic Athletic Club, Mayobridge is the oldest Gaelic Athletic Association club in County Down. They have the most successful club in Down, according to the Croke Park GAA committee.The senior team are currently County Champions having defeated Longstone in the final, making their 2007 win four in a row with the club now having won seven of the last nine county finals. Adding to the success of the senior team, the clubs under 16 team won the league and championship double in 2006. Other underage teams (U-8 and U-10) have went unbeaten in 2006[citation needed] leaving a bright future for the club. Furthermore senior statistician Tommy O'Hare is recognised throughout Ulster GAA circles as the biggest "statto" in the province.

Mayobridge is classified as a small village or hamlet by the NI Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) (ie with population between 500 and 1,000 people). On Census day (29 April 2001) there were 842 people living in Mayobridge. Of these:

  • 25.9% were aged under 16 years and 11.3% were aged 60 and over
  • 53.9% of the population were male and 46.1% were female
  • 97.5% were from a Catholic background and 2.0% were from a Protestant background
  • 5.8% of people aged 16-74 were unemployed.
