Mayo Hospital

The Mayo Hospital is located in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. It is a teaching hospital of King Edward Medical College. The college is located in Old Anarkali in Lahore city.
King Edward Medical College, built during the time when the Indo-Pak subcontinent was considered one country, is considered one of the oldest and most prestigious medical colleges of Pakistan. The college, which is ranked the Top Medical School in Punjab consistently for the past many years, has had financial contributions from people like the Nawab of Kalabagh and several other British politicians ruling the sub-continent at that time.
One of the most beautiful buildings is Patiyaala block, representing the rich Moghul architecture apparent in many other beautiful buildings in Lahore. The Patiyaala block is notable for its magnificent dome, winding staircase and the artfully done historical embellishments.
The Medical College has been graced with many talented physicians. Headed by Prof Mumtaz Hassan, some notable professors in the past have been Professor Ameeruddin, Haji Riaz e Qadeer, Dr. Seyal, Dr Akhtar Khan, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yaqub Khan (Pioneer radiologist who opened first radiology department in country), Dr. Khwaja Sadiq Hussain, Dr.Hafeez Khan,Dr. Eice Muhammad, Dr. A. H. Nagi, Dr Iftikhar Raja, Dr. T. A. Shah, Dr G. R. Qureshi, Dr Faisal Masud, Dr Majeed Chaudhry and so many more.
The Hospital has a traditionally built main building with few extensions here and there. The A&E has been purpose built away from main hospital building and right in front of main entrance. The main out patient department stands in front of the A&E.
The main hospital building houses the Medical, Surgical, ENT, Cardiac and CardioThoracic Wards. The Medical and Surgical wards are four each in number and are oriented and named according to four quadrants of compass. The buildings added to the hospital in the 1960 to 1980 were designed by A. R. Hye.
