Mayo is a constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas. It was created in 1995 combining the former constituencies of Mayo East and Mayo West. It was used for the first time in the 1997 General Election. The constituency has an electorate of 94,854 and at present is served by 5 Teachtaí Dála (TDs). The method of election is the Single Transferable Vote.
The constituency spans the entire area of Mayo County Council in the Connacht county of Mayo. These areas include Castlebar, Westport and Ballina. Geographically, Mayo is the largest constituency in the state.
Presently, the leader of Fine Gael and the Leader of the Opposition, Enda Kenny is one of the most high profile TDs from the constituency. His party colleague, Michael Ring, is outspoken on a range of issues. Beverley Flynn, who was elected as an Independent TD, having been expelled from the Parliamentary Party after losing a libel action against RTÉ and who was readmitted to Fianna Fail in 2008. Her father, Pádraig Flynn, served the constituency from 1977 to 1993 before his retirement from domestic politics. Dara Calleary whose father and grandfather both represented Mayo in Dail Eireann for many years and John O Mahony, a very prominent figure in Connaught football.
