Coordinates: 10°28′N 79°04′E / 10.47, 79.07 Mayiladuthurai (formerly Mayuram or Mayavaram) is a city and a municipality in Nagapattinam district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The town is located in the historic Thanjavur area on the banks of river Cauvery. Mayiladuthurai is a well known railway junction and the town is well-connected with other major towns in the region, such as Tiruchirappalli and Kumbakonam. Mayiladuthurai is a Lok Sabha constituency [1] represented by Mani Shankar Aiyar.

[edit] Name and significance

Legends say that due to a curse, Goddess Parvathi took birth as peacock in Mayuram and worshiped Lord Shiva in his form of Mayuranathar. Mayuram means peacock in Sanskrit and it was later translated as Mayiladuthurai in Tamil language. According to the book Mayiladuthurai Mahaangal (Saints of Mayiladuthurai), several saints lived and attained their final peace (samadhi) in and around Mayiladuthurai. Lot of siddhars also have lived here. Even today there is a village called Sidharkaadu in the western outskirts of Mayiladuthurai. Legends also tell that it was a part of Tharukavanam.

ஆயிரம் ஆனாலும் மாயூரம் ஆகாது "Ayiram Anaalum Mayuram Agaadhu" is an old saying. Maha Vidhwan Meenakshi Sundaram pillai lived in Mayuram. Tamil Grandpa U.Ve. Swaminadha Iyer was a student of Meenakshi Sundaram pillai. Mayuram Vedanayakam Pillai, who wrote "Prathapa Mudaliar Charithram" , the first Tamil Novel was a Munsif here. Amarar Kalki Ra. Krishnamurthy studied in Municipal high school, Mayuram. Renowned Carnatic musician Madurai Mani Iyer , Mayuram Rajam Iyer , Violin artist Mayuram Govindaraja pillai ( disciple of kumbakonam Rajamanikkam pillai ) were residents of Mayuram. Sri Gopala krishna Bharathiyar who wrote "Nandanar Sarithiram" lived in Anandathandavapuram, 5 km from Mayuram. One of the institutions that was formed for the flourishing of Saivam and Tamil, Dharmapuram Adhinam ( Mutt ) is in the eastern part of Mayuram. Current world chess champion Vishwanathan Anand hails from this town.

Mayiladuthurai is becoming a Third costly town in Tamilnadu.Land prices also being incressed,Due to good ground water. The famous navakiraha(9 temples)temple is near to Mayiladuthurai.Poompuhar Beach is 25km from mayiladuthurai.

The central town has the majority of business establishments. Residential areas are mostly in the two suburbs called KooRainaadu (Koranaad) and Thiru-Indaloor (Thirivizhandur).

Mayiladuthurai is famous for its Gold Jewelry business and its Marriage-Halls. Nearly a hundred marriage-halls are there in the town and people from various places come here to conduct marriage ceremonies because of Mayiladuthurai's best-in-class (cheap & readily-available) people and services for marriage ceremonies.

This is the railway junction for Chennai (via Chidambaram, Villupuram), Trichy (Via Kumbakonam, Tanjore) and Thiruvarur. The year (2005 - 2006 ) the Mayiladuthurai - Trichy Railway line converted to Broad gauge. (2006 - 2007) the conversion happening for Mayiladuthurai - Villupuram Section.

Agriculture is the main activity in this area as this is a cultivation rich land. Rice and sugarcane are two such main products.

Two sugar mills are located in Mayiladuthurai.

In Ancient days, KooRai nADu (suburb of Mayavaram) was famous for the silk sarees (9 yards) weaving and still Tamil people are using the word "kooraip pattu"(koorai silks) and kooraip puDavai (sari).

It is nearly 280 km south of Madras and can be reached by trains going via Main line and also through road. Best way to reach Mayiladuthurai from Chennai is through ECR (East Coast Road) via PONDICHERRY.

Mayiladuthurai is one of the major junctions in Southern railway with lines branching off to Madras, Trichy, Thiruvarur and Tharangampadi. The town was in the composite Thanjavur district but now it is part of Nagappattinam district. It is the headquarters of an Educational district and is one of the 40 parliamentary constituencies in Tamil Nadu.

We can get the Direct train to go to Bangalore and Mysore.

Nearest Airport - Trichy.

As of 2001 India census[1], Mayiladuthurai had a population of 84,290. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Mayiladuthurai has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 84%, and female literacy is 76%. In Mayiladuthurai, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The Mayooranathar Temple, also called the 'big temple' is a temple dedicated to Shiva where Thevaram is recited.

Vallalar Temple in the northern bank of river Cauvery is a famous Shiva temple known for its Guru shrine.

Ayyarapper Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva is located at the center of the city. ThulA Festival is famous in this temple and it is celebrated in the month of October.

Parimala Ranganathar temple, the Vishnu temple in Thiru-Indalur suburb is one among the 108 Dhivya Desams.

Gangai konda Cholapuram, a more than 1000 years old temple is just 40Km from mayiladuthurai. It is a must-see historic place.

Navagraha temples are situated around this town. There are many famous temples in Mayiladuthurai's vicinity, most important amongst which is Vaitheeswarankoil. The temple complex is known to house many astrologers employing a method of fortune telling called NADI Jyothidam. The town also has a Medhaa Dakshinamurthi temple. Other temples of importance include the Sukran Temple and a temple in TirukkaDavUr is dedicated to Lord amirthakaDEswarar and Goddess Abirami.

One of the institutions that was formed for the flourishing of Saivam and Tamil, Dharmapuram Adhinam (Mutt) is in the eastern part of Mayuram.

It is the most important location for "tulA snAnam", in the river Kavery in the Tamil month of "aippasi".

Moovalur Markasagaya shiva temple constructed by Kulothunga cholan is 4Km away from Mayiladuthurai.

Durga Temple is also famous and is 2 Km from Mayiladuthurai.

Tirupambupuram is a very ancient Shiva temple. It is known as Dakshina Kalahasti. It is located near peralam.

Thirumanancheri Temple is very famous very near from mayiladuthurai
