Maya Hussam Asmar or better known by her stage name, Maya Nasri (Arabic:مايا نصري) is a Lebanese actress and singer. She began as an actress, however, Maya achieved fame when she entered the Arabic music industry with her debut single "Khallini Bel Jaw". Since then she has released four studio albums, cooperating with the most important Arabic composers like Samir Sfeir, Ziad Boutros, Marwan Khouri, Walid Saed, and Tareq Abou-Jaoude. Maya is also an important Lebanese actress and well-known in Egypt. She put her music career on hold to film movies and TV series because she considers acting her primary career, but she made a comeback with her latest album "Jayi elWa't" afterwards. Maya is one of the most important Arab talents both in professional acting, and her unique romantic style in singing.

[edit] Early Life and beginnings

Maya Hussam Asmar was born in a small town in Northern Lebanon and later moved with her family to Beirut. There she joined the Lebanese University of Fine Arts to study theatre arts, TV and cinema, acting and directing. She acted in Lebanese series, theatres, plays, and movies, and was a high fashion modeling. In 1996 she worked as a TV presenter in the national TV but later made the transition to singing in 1998. She participated in the television show "Kas Al-Nojoum" where she sang the famous songs of the late big Egyptian star "Layla Mourad". She won all three gold cups. She also participated in "Studio elFan", and was supported by prominent Lebanese director Simon Asmar for a certain time. After her victory she began to work vigorously on creating her debut album.


Maya first gained attention and popularity with the release of her album Akhbarak Eih...?. It was exceeded expectations and was well received in Lebanon and was highly praised by many Middle-Easterners Arabs and gulf area. The three hit singles Akhbarak Eih?, Ya Waheshni, and Khalini Biljao boosted Maya to her fame.

They were big hits topping the charts in Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and all of the Middle East and the Arab world. The album did respectively well in record sales and Maya became a household name. As a result of her album's success, Maya went on her first Middle Eastern tour, as well as her Canada - America tour which were both completely sold out , Maya was highly embraced by her loving fans while she performed in her concerts.

Maya's Debut hit was "Khallini Bel Jaw" (Keep Me in the Mood) which achieved huge success for a long time, and put Maya as an important star in the field.

After taking a short break, Maya returned with a new hit album. Law Kan Lak Alb was the title that was chosen for the album. Law Kan Lak Alb was a huge hit and received excellent reviews. It topped charts throughout the Middle East. The album's second single, 7abbit Hob also achieved great success. It topped various charts and was constantly being played on radio and television screens. The album also did very well and once again achieved high record sales. Maya then released the single Ana Bahtaglak in one of "Star Academy 1" primes in Lebanon and it was a major hit too. The hits of the album: "Lan Kan Lak Alb" (If You Had a Heart..), "Habbit Hob" (A Piece of Love), "Khofy" (My Fear), "Zakkerni Feek" (Remind Me of Yourself?), Et3azzebt Ya Albi etc..

Izzay Te'rafni was released under the production company Rotana, in July 2005, and received strenuous promotion. The album released three singles: Rooh, Al Asmarani, and Izzay Te'rafni. "Rooh" was an immediate smash hit and it topped countless charts across the Middle East. Maya was quickly back in the spotlight. She then released the single "Al Asmarani", which was a huge hit. It remained number one on various charts throughout the Middle East for over six weeks. After her second huge hit, Maya decided to release the last single off the album. "Izzay Te'rafni" was released, but no video clip was released due to political instability in Lebanon. "Shou Feeha Law", which was composed by prominent Lebanese singer Samir Sfeir, achieved huge success and topped radio stations. Fans have requested Maya to film it, however this was not done due to Maya's lack of time with her movie career.

Jayi lwa't Again under the production of Rotana , two years and a half later , was released in February 2008. immediately fans adored the songs. "Jayi elWa2t" (The Time is Coming..) was a full-package song by Marwan Khouri, that served as a great comeback for Maya. Already in the spotlight with the movies she did, she is back as a singer . Maya is still waiting Rotana to shoot the cinema clip for one of the songs " Hassa Bih Biykhonni".

Maya has received countless offers to perform in Egyptian movies , considering her talent in acting directors discovered in Maya's cinema clips, not knowing her studies were in the same field ,but she kept refusing for 6 years because she was still looking for the senario that gives her the opportunity to represent the best her country "Lebanon" in the Arab world.

February 2007 witnessed the birth of Maya the Movie Star , by the release of the Egyptian movie " Code 36 " starring for the first time " Maya Nasri " and Egyptian Jeune Premier " Mostafa Sha'aban "..Since they started promoting the movie, Maya released a single "Ana Kont Eih" as a trailer and there started the offers for other big movies and series. The movie was not well reviewed by the critics but " Maya was the surprise of the movie and the only good thing there ." said all the Arab magazines. They all expected Maya to be a big movie star very soon. In September 2007 , "Ramadan" month in Muslim calendar where we see lots of Egyptian series with big stars, Maya starred for the first time in Egypt in the Egyptian series " Sultan El Gharam" with the star actor Khaled Saleh and it was a big hit in the Arab world. In December 2007 was released the second movie " Khareg 'ala Lqanon "starring Maya with the big Egyptian movie star " Karim Abdel'aziz ".. The movie was a hit and the first week it hit "7 million Egyptian Pounds" ( a million and a half American Dollars).

In March 2008 Maya started shooting a new Ramadan series "Wekalet Aatiyya" starring the Egyptian Stars "Houssein Fahmy" and "Ahmad Bedeir" and directed by "Ra'fat Elmihi" one of the biggest movie directors in the Arab world, in his first experience in TV series. She is playing the role of a Palestinian woman who ran away from Palestine in 1948.
