Though this image is subject to copyright, its use is covered by the U.S. fair use laws because:

The image is used as the primary means of visual identification of the Maytag Repairman, a significant advertising mascot for Maytag that is discussed at length within the article.
The image is used to provide irreplaceable visual information in the context of an informative article about the company that used this advertising character.
It is a low resolution image cropped from an advertisement for Maytag.
The Maytag Repairman is a copyrighted, fictional character; Gordon Jump, the depicting actor, is furthermore deceased. It is accordingly impossible to replace the image with an uncopyrighted or freely licensed image.

This is a copyrighted image that has been released by a company or organization to promote their work or product in the media, such as advertising material or a promotional photo in a press kit.
