[edit] Gods vs Deities

(Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_talk:Maya_gods") Using both the category 'Maya gods' and 'Maya deities' is confusing. 'Gods' can be understood in contrast to goddesses, but is also, and more generally, a full equivalent of 'deities'. Therefore, there should not be a sub-category 'Maya gods' under the heading 'Maya deities'. As a matter of fact, the Maya gods include goddesses. 86.87.62.150 17:36, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Actually, I've thought for a long time that it would be better to delete the "gods/goddesses" categories altogether, and roll them up into Cat:Maya deities - the same goes for related cat schemes eg Cat:Mesoamerican deities, Cat:Aztec deities. Dividing these by gender is IMO not really all that useful, and is in fact often problematic in Mesoamerican belief systems, where deity-like figures may frequently be regarded as multi-faceted along both quadripartite and dualism lines- Ometeotl being a notable case-in-point. It's a proposal that I'd look to put up at WP:CFD after some further project discussion.--cjllw | TALK 00:28, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
