Thanks for your answer on User talk:Ldingley#do you know something? concerning the nice photo of Josef. So I assume, that 1. I could copy this picture to commons (as I will use it in about two other wikis) and that 2. notice ”... shows that JVS was searched for criminal activities since the beginning of 1900's...” under the thumb would be right? Thanks, -jkb- 14:18, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

Absolutely right. MaxSem 14:40, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AWB

Hi, there are several versions of this sofware:

  • Download x86 version
  • Download x64 version
  • Download IA64 version

Which one of them should be downloaded. --Sa.vakilian(t-c) 09:47, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Depends on which PC do you have (x86, I guess). MaxSem 10:06, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia talk:Notability (people)#Regarding notability of Football (soccer) players

Hi, seeing you have been involved in previous Afd debates on the subject I invite you to contribute to this discussion to clarify certain issues about football player notability. I think clearer guidelines are needed to avoid repeated inappropriate nominations for deletion and time consuming discussions. Cheers! StephP 20:49, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Querying the dump with SQL

Thank you for you answer here. Please guide me in dump querying with SQL. Mashiah 22:29, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Once again. There are two lists in the query: disambiguations and chronological articles. Am I right these lists can be constructed querying the database (are there category related fields)? Mashiah 22:50, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

See m:Dumps. MaxSem 07:00, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, it looks like there is no other way and I have to have a deep trip into this. Unfortunately all the mechanisms working with dump cannot provide an actual result and there will be some obsolete data usually making wikipedians angry =(. Mashiah 12:05, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] My Favourite Classic Cars

Was My Favourite Classic Cars a worthy page to have redirect to Classic Cars? Or did I accidently put the deletion tag on the classic cars page rather than the vandal one? Sorry for any possible inconvenience... --Vince 08:42, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

You've tagged the vandalised and pagemoved page for speedy deletion. Later I moved it back, nominated resulting redirect for deletion and updated the link on your talk page. MaxSem 08:45, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Engineering

[edit] Main page patch

I don't have an account over on Bugzilla, so I thought I've comment here: if people can't delete the Main Page, it might be difficult to delete/oversight libellous edits, which I believe is done by deleting the page and restoring all revisions except the offending one. That might be what Brion was getting at on the Bugzilla thread? Carcharoth 14:11, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Probably, he prefers things to be as flexible as possible. But my patch didn't block it from page moves and changes of MediaWiki:Mainpage. Now this request is closed as WONTFIX and I think it was too hasty. MaxSem 14:16, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
He was probably also thinking it might snowball, and we would end up with hundreds of "don't delete" pages, which is not very wiki-like. But anyway, thanks for the thoughts. Carcharoth 14:37, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Congratulations. Here are what pass for words of wisdom from the puppy:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version.
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. You will always pick the wrong one to do. (See #5)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll.
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block.
  5. Remember when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology.
  6. and finally, Remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

I was frustrated and disappointed that you chose to delete our page LearnScope without discussion and contact. LearnScope is an educational program with international interest. Please read our policies on notability, neutral point of view, conflict of interest and finally the relevant criteria for speedy deletion. If you would like to create a Wikipedia article, please make sure that it: a) asserts notability b) is neutral enough not to look like spam. If you disagree with deletion, you could request a review. [edit] NowCommons and {{missing image}}

Regarding this edit, would you mind putting a link in the template to the location where what sort of technical problems require the temporary postponement of image deletion? Thanks. howcheng {chat} 19:31, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

I believe that is to do with the major outages we had this morning. Cant see any reason why it cant be reverted. Reedy Boy 19:35, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

I am wondering if you are going to be providing any expalantion on the talk page as to why the {{missing image}} template has been temporaraly suspended [2]. I am sure there is a very valid reason, it would just be nice to have a bit more information then a terse edit summary of "temporary disabled". Also the change seems to make reference to commons images, but the template deals with missing images. Thanks.--User:Gay Cdn (talk) (Contr) 01:30, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] User talk:Wikiboxatgmail

Your decline request is ridiculous. Are you plea bargaining with this user? Does he need to show you that he is going to work on articles? Does he have to propose new changes to articles? This project has only voluntary users, and he will contribute when he wants it, there are no compulsions and no conditions. From where did get the authority to place users under probation? You are biting newbies and discouraging them from actively contributing on Wikipedia. — Nearly Headless Nick {C} 11:05, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Sir Nicholas, keep it cool. I don't feel comfortable unblocking the user who stated that he will continue the violations with zero useful contributions and no assertion of good intentions. If you don't like such approach, feel free to TfD this. MaxSem 17:44, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Brittany Andrews

You state on the Brittany Andrews talk page that Wikipedia has permission to use her MySpace biography. A few questions:

1. Has it been confirmed that the page here is indeed that of Brittany? Given how easy it is to create fakes on MySpace I'm rather cautious.

2. Does this permission extend to the pictures found on the page? If so, what license would be used if they were to be added to Wikipedia?

Thanks! Tabercil 22:39, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

I see you protected this page but had you seen this recent discussion on Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard and the reason Coldmachine made the edit. See also Coldmachine's talk page for his discussion with Dcooper who alerted him to the fact that a non-admin was denying an unblock request. Coldmachine clearly wanted an experienced Admin to fulfill that role.

overquoting from WP:AN removed

--217.41.217.24 12:32, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

I have pretty enough experience with administarative work on Wikipedia, and being a steward, I know how checkuser works. The results of AN discussion are inconclusive, and blocked users should not revert unblock declines like that anyway. Without knowledge of checkuser details, no admin should undo such blocks based on one-word result from the person who performed the check. MaxSem 12:53, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

No disrespect to your status was intended.
My thoughts were :-
I merely wanted to check you were fully aware of the background.
The review was not carried out by an admin.
Coldmachine reverted the tag so that an admin could review it?
I wrote to you because I thought the non-admin review was wrong and
I felt that Coldmachine was right to revert it so that it could be properly reviewed by an admin.
--217.41.217.24 13:15, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
Believe me, I'm fully aware of the Emnx case. MaxSem 13:42, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
Then you'll be aware of the edit history comparison between Arthana and Coldmachine which proves their innocence then?--217.41.217.24 14:03, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
I've seen it, and it's no less conclusive than the evidence of contrary. That's why I didn't unblock Coldmachine, and will not unblock him in future, also I don't know just how much likely the checkuser results are. MaxSem 14:08, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
Did you see this response to the alleged confession by Arthana

I added a speedy delete tag and whilst editing the page another editor removed it. I was in the middle of adding a note to state that as the Author Coldmachine had blanked the page I was placing the tag as that was clearly his intention (taken together with the statement on his user page). Therefore in order to add an explanation I added a blank and put a note in the edit history. :::In my haste I typed

(I am not Emnx I am Coldmachine I added speedy delete because THE AUTHOR blanked the page and wanted the process stopped.)
or this regarding their respective ISPs
A likely checkuser result is not conclusive. However, it is likely that two users in the UK would use BT the UK's largest ISP . . . so is it likely that all five million are sock puppets. In fact Coldmachine put on his talk page he uses Orange - Orange rent space on BT Servers. Search google for "orange broadband on BT Servers" - first result "I will not be able to connect to Orange Internet Broadband until the "BT Server" in my area is no longer down." another "Was told the problem was that I was on BT servers".

Please contact a checkuser. There is nothing I can do. MaxSem 14:32, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Presumably you've seen Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mandrake of Oxford (third nomination). IPSOS is involved in the voting. In previous listings etc. IPSOS and GlassFET were accused of being a meatpuppet and having a COI. If this is to be a clean decision both IPSOS and GlassFET should be disqualified from participation. Also please note that GlassFET posted a holiday notice and stopped editing . . . IPSOS also stopped a couple of days after and has just started editing again no doubt just before GlassFET comes back to add another merge/keep vote. PLEASE look at the history and tactics of these two. They work together all the time! If nothing else, given all the controversy, over Mandrake of Oxford don't allow them to vote as they were just as much of the problem as alleged sockpuppets.--86.131.32.150 23:59, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Lamborghini Diablo article

Listen, the only proper pics for these articles are in my opinion the offical pictures of automobili Lamborghini. The pictures posted now are of a very poor quality.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.204.152.83 (talkcontribs)

Please read up our policy on this matter. You are prohibited from using copyrighted images where a free alternative is possible, whether you like it or not. Also, please stop using sockpuppets and anon IPs, things like that are not tolerated here. MaxSem 16:00, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] inappropriate default values

After Midnight thinks my "you seem to be saying that since there is no solution, there must not be a problem either" comment to you was "snippy and dismissive", and an attack. As far as I'm concerned, it was snippy, but it was certainly not an attack. Either way, I am sorry if I caused offence or brought down the tone of the discussion. I appreciate the effort you guys put in to maintaining and improving AWB, and don't mean to take your efforts for granted or make your work unpleasant. Hesperian 03:40, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Close of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Welcome Home (CBS Television Network)

I believe you were incorrect in closing the afd for Welcome Home (CBS Television Network) as delete. The discussion indicated no consensus -- less than half the !votes were for delete. There's a set of several articles on CBS slogans, and they should all be listed together so a proper decision can be made. I was just waiting for this one to close before making that nomination. I'd like the article undeleted so it can be evaluated along with the rest in a new nomination that figures out a solution for all of them. Ichibani utc 23:01, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Feel free to DRV it, then. Consensus is not vote-counting. MaxSem 08:10, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
I mentioned the number only because a minority is not likely to indicate a group consensus. All I ask is that it be undeleted when I nominate the rest of List of CBS slogans so it can receive a better, more determinate discussion. To save the hassle of DRV, would you be willing to do that? Ichibani utc 02:12, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
Sounds good. MaxSem 05:49, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AWB losing session fix

What exactly did you do to make sure AWB doesn't edit as an anon? Did you have it check if the user is still logged in every x minutes? And could you maybe release another beta version. It seems there have been a lot of changes that I think are important. --(Review Me) R you talking to me?Contribs@ (Let's Go Yankees!) 18:39, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Blocking

Regarding this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:PANONIAN#Blocked First, let say that I have no intentions to avoid Wiki rules, but since I already have dynamic ip adress that you cannot block I created a temporary account only because it allows me to talk with you here (with blocked ip I can edit only my own talk page and I cannot defend myself succesfully like that). Of course, I have no intentions to edit articles with this new temporary account and I will respect fully my 72 hours block. However, I do not think that blocking was justified and fair. I want to ask you to tell me what exactly I done wrong in my edits. The "edit-wars" that you mentioned in which I was involved were my attempts to "clean" these articles (and I wrotte 90% of most of them) from POV-pushing, trolling and bad faith edits (as I explained on talk pages of all these articles) - the only place where I did not explained this on the talk page is Ahtum article, but the issue is disscussed on Talk:Sermon (ruler) since the same issue is in question there. In another words, please tell me what exactly you think that I done wrong, so we can discuss it here or on my talk page and if I was really wrong I will accept my punishment and I will not behave like this any more, but if I was not wrong in my edits, I demand official apology from you - I believe that would be fair enough. User:PANONIAN

I'ts very easy: don't revert without discussing, and NEVER revert too much. See unblock decline by another admin. MaxSem 13:50, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Emad Khorasani

Nice try about prod but presence on google and putting the information you find in the article are two different things. The article as written, as I said in my prod, simply acknowledges he exists. And simply existing isn't notable. If you want this article to stay, then improve it significantly and improve it fast since the consensous so far on AFD is to delete. [edit] AWB's Recursive category loader thingy...

I've added a potential fix - rev 1398/rev 1399

Not sure which as i think i didnt save it completed before i commited the first. And it reports different binary files, so you cant actually view a diff..

I've added a list of categories visited, and if the loop has already visited that category, it wont visit it again. Hopefully reducing some of the un-necessary server load that comes from loading categories multiple times!!

Needs testing, gonna create some test cats later to check it!

[edit] User_talk:Coldmachine

Hi, can you please unblock my talk page now that my account has been unblocked by Jimbo? I thought I'd ask direct rather than submit a request for unprotection: is that right? If I need to do a request for unprotection just let me know and I can go do that. Thanks. ColdmachineTalk 20:39, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi MaxSem, not to worry, I'm guessing you're away since it's been a few days so I submitted an unprotection request which was dealt with by another admin. Best. ColdmachineTalk 23:38, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] rev 1385

rev 1385 - I don't really follow what you've done there (and it's late...) Were you fixing things, or turning stuff off? Some of the edits look a bit peculiar...

Basic log writing is now working - was a trivial error that Sam could have fixed... Uploading I'm working on. Log tab and skipping seem to have broken since I've been away; dunno if r1385 had anything to do with it or not (probably not). Profiles is visually quite nice but the error handling and logic are very flaky. I'll try and point Sam in the right direction on that; have debugged some of it already. --kingboyk 00:53, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Steve, was discussed first. Unfortunately, you've broken lots of things while adding functionality related to your plugin, and then vanished for some time w/o fixing it. So I had to fix at least basic functionality, and I wasn't ready to get logging to work without knowledge of Kingbotk. Sorry if it caused any inconvenience. MaxSem 13:48, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Log tab & skipping worked in .2.0 - may help identify changes which broke it?

I dunno what you folks have been up to since I was away, but I have a binary of 3.9.2.0, and skipping and log tab (saved/ignored) all work as designed [binaries and settings file for testing can be supplied if you need]. The only thing not working then that I had anything to do with was logging to file, which I've now fixed in the svn version (except for uploads, which I'm working on).

See Wikipedia_talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Dev#SVN. --kingboyk 02:03, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

rev 1358 and rev 1359. I don't think it's acceptable to break a feature to fix another, and certainly not acceptable to break the work of others (myself and Mets) without even informing them! --kingboyk 13:21, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, I don't buy this. You've already been indef-blocked, but still did not learn your lesson. MaxSem 05:43, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
I know this user from dealing with him before. I personally think he had a bad start, because he had trouble understanding the policies and US copyright law (it isn't exactly easy). I had begun coaching him on this, until I got distracted by real life, but I think he was beginning to understand what was and wasn't allowed and that he did indeed have a legal right to upload at least some of the images used. Do you think there is a possibility of releasing the block for a period of probation, or is it a hopeless case in your opinion? --Pekaje 12:38, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
He uploaded loads of watermarked images as his own. I don't know if this could be considered ignorance, or he simply does not care about copyrights, but it was his second indefinitely-blocked account and if you still believe that Migssant can learn not to call other people's work his own - I suggest you to start a discussion at ANI, as I don't feel confident to unblock. [edit] Help with user who created Secretary of Defense Robert Gates

Yesterday user Kathryncoluzzi created a page entitled Secretary of Defense Robert Gates as a open letter to complain about not receiving information on her husband who has been missing. I tagged the article for speedy deletion (as CSD G10 a personal attack against the Secretary of Defense) and you deleted it since an open letter is outside of Wikipedia's scope. When she realized that the article had been deleted she contacted me begging me to reconsider and saying that I was unfit for Wikipedia because I would not let her publish her "article." I replied by explaining my positions(and refered her to WP:NOT#OR informed her that that I am not a sysop and that I did not make the decision to delete and told her to contact you if she wanted to discus it anymore. She then contacted me again and repeated that I was unfit for Wikipedia and told me to call her (which I have no intent to do) she also recreated the page with the same message with her cell phone number (the page has since been redirected to Robert Gates.) Please help me out here by either talking to her. TonyBallioni 19:29, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] This case

Dear MaxSem, After seeing your comments at the User:Lahiru_k s talk page , I have decided to write to you regarding the block. As some one who is studying about networking and has some knowledge about how the DHCP works, and some one who has used Sri Lankas ONLY ADSL provider SL telecom, please let me to add my input here.If you take a look at the wikipedian article it clearly states ,In current practice, an IP address is less likely to be an identifier ! And it has explained the reason for it too.One of it is due to technologies such as:Dynamic assignment. Even the wikipedia article contrary blocking admins decision. The only ADSL provider in SL is SL telecom and they allocate IPs dynamically. And if you know about DHCP, then you would know its highly possible to have same IPs at different times.Go through their edits and IPs, then you would see many IP addresses. go through yours,if you are using a static IP,then there will be only 1.(If you still don't believe me ask any of you friends who has any basic knowledge about networking/DHCP).I have said similar thing in the SSP page and havent got any reply yet. I am humbly asking you to, look at the contributions of the editors.Look at the timing of the editing. Its quite clear that these two persons,(netmonger and LahiruK) are not the same people. And if they keep blocking people for this, then sadly there will be no editors from SL. And I am not sure, whether this is what great people who built this expected..The true essence of free-encyclopaedia where everyone could edit has been hurt by this decision. And to let it stay hurt, is probably the greatest damage we could do for wikipedia,at least to my knowledge.Thank you.Iwazaki 会話。討論 13:33, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

comment

And could you please take a look at this. This actually is a good proof how the IPs are dynamically allocated and how this alone should not be used to(as the wikipedia articile) identify the users. Hope this would help to make justice to the blocked users.thank you Iwazaki 会話。討論 14:53, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Iwazaki, I'm an IT professional myself and you don't need to explain me such basics. If that SSP case were only about IPs, fine. But there are also loads of behaviourial evidence, that's why I feel it completely uncomfortable about fulfilling his unblock request. Also, let me remind you that you're suspected in this case too and such fierce defence makes it really suspicious. MaxSem 16:10, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Well, not only me,all the SL editors are suspects!! Which made me think the whole SSP is highly suspicious made of bad faith and solely on the purpose of get ridding of all the SL based editors. And If you carefully read the SSP, you would realise there are NO evidence against me and many others, and many allegations he made are in fact totally false.
And considering the behaviour evidence, could you please show me how Lahiru_k disrupt wikipedia ? He has done many good edits and though he was blocked before for sock puppeting (which was also based on wrong assumptions).he has never engaged in any thing close to sock puppeting at all since then. If you really consider behaviour problems,we have people blatantly violating, WP:COI,we have people who disrupt all the SL related articles with false information, why don't you extend the block to them ??!!
MaxSem, The blocking admin has clearly made a mistake regarding IPs. And since you are a computer expert, I am not going to waste ur time by saying same thing over and over. The whole block is based on having similar IPs. And this is possible even according to the wikipedia article. I have shown u the evidences. If they keep blocking people for this, there will be no editors from SL. IS that what wikipedia expect ? Isn't this a discrimination against a poor country like SL, where people tend to edit from there schools(kaushinis case, she goes to same school like Lahiru_k), and IPs are dynamically allocated ? I sincerely hope this would end soon, and justice prevail. Thank you very much. Iwazaki 会話。討論 00:28, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
let me add one more thing, I would fiercely defend any innocent person, regardless of their country or religion or race.Iwazaki 会話。討論 00:51, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hi MaxSem, Deleted article

Insert non-formatted text hereHi Max, I am new Wiki supplier/editor and did not know about the strict rules. I did edit it, I went for lunch, kept on making it neutral, but then you just deleted 2 hours of work. Why can not an email go out beforehand so we know the exact time for deletion. Now I have to start from scratch. Not very encouraging. Wikipedi.org did NOT have any information on one of the larges building companies in the world before, so I felt I added value. I do however have a copyright back ground....that might have caused it to look bad in your eyes. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wiki10peter (talkcontribs)

That article had two major problems: 1) it was written by someone who has connections with its subject and therefore, 2) it was unacceptably biased and looked much like an advertisement. According to our policy, writing artciles in conflict of interest is frowned upon, if your company is notable, someone will write an article on it sometime. By the way, speaking of notability, the article had no reliable, third-party sources to back up its claims and establish notability. MaxSem 18:34, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
