[edit] On Wikipedia

Quotes:

"..unreadable crap" - Jimbo Wales on Wikipedia content.

"..total crap" - Gerald Ratner on his wares (speech at the I.O.D in 1991).

My thoughts on wikipedia (the short version):

  • Wikipedia is a very different encyclopedia - it has over 500,000 editors who continually change and develop it; it has far more scope and far more articles than any publication in human history; and it is a place for mass dialogue, argument and social interaction.
  • Wikipedia is so important and influential that its ownership and control (including hardware/server) should be taken over by Wikimedia Foundation as a non-profit knowledge resource owned and controlled by Wikipedia editors through a democratic body (see below).
  • Wikipedia needs much more accountability of administrators, Arbcom, Bureaucrats, Stewards, and Developers. I think many editors disagree with "This should be no big deal". That statement reminds one of Lenin's thinking immediately after the Russian Revolution .."That this is no paradox anyone can easily see .." [1], as well as Marx's while in debate with Bakunin - "If Mr Bakunin were familiar just with the position of a manager in a worker's co-operative, he could send all his nightmares about authority to the devil.." - page 99, Marx, A Very Short Introduction by Peter Singer ISBN 0192854054. See also: social class and apparatchik.
  • Wikipedia needs a sovereign[1], legislative 'general council' composed of ALL editors (of more than 4 months standing?) rather than a elite steering committee or 'Arbcom'. The council would be a decision-making body and a deliberative assembly. It would be a conduit for important working groups temporary and permanent, would be able to change Wikipedia's policies when necessary and also be a place for appeals or petitions (more in the general sense of the word). The argument that anyone can go off and 'create their own wikipedia' is basically a cop-out. I believe Wikipedia:WikiProject Council is indicative of a development towards that.. and the natural need for or workability of such a body.
  • Jimbo Wales needs to give up all excess ownership and control. - now this should be no big deal!
  • Wikipedia should be recognised for being the democratic, international organisation that it is or needs to be.
  1. ^ supreme in rank or authority. - Collins English Mini Dictionary, 1998, HarperCollins ISBN 0004700953
