Maxwell "Max" Kane is a fictional character created by Rodman Philbrick. He first appears as the unreliable narrator of Philbrick's novel Freak the Mighty, and returns in its sequel, Max the Mighty. He also appears in The Mighty', a 1998 film adaptation of the first book, in which he is portrayed by Elden Henson.

In the stories, Max lives with his mom's parents so his grandparents, (Grim and Gram), after his father killed his mother and subsequently was sent to prison. In Freak the Mighty he is friends with Kevin "Freak" Dillon, a genius suffering from Morquio syndrome, whom Max carries on his shoulders. Kevin dies in the first book; Max is the protagonist of the sequel.

In "Max the Mighty" Max Finds himself defending a young, solitary girl cruelly nicknamed "Worm" because she loves to read. Max gets blamed for a horrific crime, he and Worm flee across America - hunted by the police and pursued by the mysterious man known as "The Undertaker".
