[edit] Biography
Verhagen was born in Maastricht. He studied history at Leiden University, obtaining a degree in 1986. He started working for the CDA and was elected to the council of Oegstgeest. From 1989 to 1994, he was a member of the European Parliament. On 17 May 1994 he became a member of the Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament. On 11 July 2002 he became fractievoorzitter (chairman) of the CDA. After becoming minister of foreign affairs in the fourth Balkenende cabinet, in 2007, he was succeeded in that position by Pieter van Geel.
For a brief period during his student time, Verhagen affiliated both with leftish-radicalism and the liberal People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD); he joined the CDA in 1976.[1]
