MAX is a Linux distribution sponsored by the department of education of the autonomous community of Madrid. MAX stands for MAdrid LinuX. It is based on Knoppix.[citation needed] Since 2003 MAX has been installed on all the computers of the schools in the autonomous community of Madrid. MAX supports both KDE and GNOME along with most common programs used under Linux such as Konqueror, Mozilla Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org, Mozilla Firefox and Audacity. MAX comes as both a Live CD and an installable system.
