Mavelikkara is a town in Alappuzha district of Kerala, India. It is in the southern part of Alappuzha district on the banks of the Achankovil River.

- Allind steel near Mannar
- Travancore Oxygen near Kunnam
- Sangrose Laboratories, a local company in Mavelikara, specialises in the manufacture of soft gelatin capsules. It is also one of the only companies in the world to manufacture clofazimine.

As of the 2001 Indian census,[1] Mavelikara had a population of 28,440. Males constitute 47% of the population and females 53%. Mavelikkara has an average literacy rate of 86%, higher than the national average of 59.5%. Male literacy is 87%, and female literacy is 85%. In Mavelikkara, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

[edit] Mother Teresa Trophy Boat Race
The Mother Teresa Trophy Boat Race is one of the important boat races on the Achankovil River. It is held during Onam every year, along the stretch between Mandapathu kadav ghat at Mavelikkara and Prayikkara Bridge at Prayikkara. Many of the celebrated Snake Boats in Kerala participate in this race. The Payippadan Snake Boat become first and got the Trophy in the 10th race held on 26th of August 2007.

[edit] Chettikulangara
Located about 5 km (3 miles) south-west of Mavelikkara , Chettikulangara is famous for the well known Bhagavathy temple. The important festival in this temple is the Kumbha Bharani festival conducted during February-March. The important festivity associated with this utsavam is "kettu-Kazhcha' which resembles the Chinese festival celebrated on the birthday of Budha. Kuthiyottam is also another important festivity. This is the second largest temple under Travancore Devaswom Board.

Located on the Mavelikkara -Kurathikadu-Kayamkulam road, Bharanikavu is famous for its Devi Temple and its swarna jeevitha and houses one of the four Buddha Statues (Puthrachan)in Alappuzha District.The famous Churches of Kattanam add to the glory of this calm and peaceful panchayat.Government School-Bharanikkavu,Pope Pius XI High School,CMS High School are some of the major educational institutions.
Famous personalities include Cartoonist Yesudasan, Bharanikavu Shivakumar.

The Thekkekkara panchayath lies between chettikulangara, Bharanicavu and Thazhakkara Panchayaths of Mavelikkara taluk. Famous personalities from this place are Prof. R.Narendraprasad, Varikkolil Kesavan Unnithan, Nadalayil Kunjukrishnan unnithan, Magician Samraj etc.

Kandiyoor is place of historical importance. It was there that the Travancore Raja gained the decisive victory over Kayamkulam Raja. There is famous Mahadeva temple which contains the sub-shrines considered to have been made especially sacred by the presence of all Gods of Hindu Pantheon. There are ancient inscriptions of archaeological importance and it is noted for stone sculptures.

Mavelikara Diocese is the 6th diocese of Syro Malankara Catholic Church with 94 parishes and 37,000 faithfuls. The Bishop of this Diocese is His Grace. Joshua mar Ignathios.The Bishop House is Situated in Punnamoodu 2Km from heart of Mavelikara. The throne Church of this Diocese is St.Mary's Cathedral, Punnamoodu. Chettikulangara Bhagawathy Temple, Mavelikkara - This temple is very famous in Kerala, as it is believed that the deity of the Bhagawathy temple has miraculous healing powers. In the months of February and March the temple is teaming with life as the festival of Bharani takes place during this time. The temple comes alive with activities and grand feasts. Kandiyoor Temple, Mavelikkara - One among the Mahakshetras of kerala ,is the oldest historical evidence of the rich heritage of Mavelikara. This is also known as Dakshina Kashi. There are 108 famous Siva temples all over the world. Kandiyoor temple is one among them. Saint Mrikandu, the father and guru of famous Markandeya, got a beautiful idol of Kiratha Moorthy,while taking abath in the holy river ,the Ganges.He heard a divine voice (Assariri),that the idol must be laid in a very holy and suitable place.The saint traveled far andwide and reached Kandiyoor,which he realized as the apt place(Kandathil nallathe Kandayoor). Thus the temple was esatblished. From Kandayoor it became Kandiyoor. This is the legend of the temple. Mavelikkara Sreekrishnaswami Temple - Situated in the heart of the town this is a famous Sree Krishna temple which is managed and owned by travancore devaswom board.copper thached square sreekovil, namaskara mandapam, chuttambalam, balikkalppura, vilakkumadom, golden kodimaram, stambhavilakku, aanakkottil, oottupura, gopuram on the eastern side and the velakkulam in the north are the consistents of the temple complex. The main festival will be in the month meenam with aarattu on thiruvonam naaldhasavatharam charthu and garudavahanam ezhunnallathu are the important programmes .During the festival.the garuda vahanam was donated by uthradam thirunal maharaja of travancore. Kulakkada thamarassery nambi madom are performing the thanthric duties of the temple.

The Achan Kovil river originates from Pasukida mettu, Ramakkal Theri and Rishimalai of Kollam district enters the district at Venmony and has a catchment area of 1155.14 sq.km and a marginable length of 32.19 Km. It passes through Cheriyanad, Puliyoor and Chengannur villages, enters Mavelikkara Taluk at prayikkara flows through Chennithala, Thriperumthura and pallippad villages and joins Pamba at Veeyapuram. This church is famous for the resolution (Padiyola), unanimously accepted at the Mavelikara Synod held in 1836 at the Mavelikara Puthiyakavu St. Mary's church which was drawn up in the Year of Our Lord 1836 corresponding to 5th Makarom 1011 at the church dedicated to the Virgin Mother of Our Lord at Mavelikara,
