[edit] Software-only upgrades
- A "Sleep" menu item. Identical to holding Play for three seconds, but much more obvious.
- Option to accept CEC sleep/wake instructions, allowing it to sleep when the TV is turned off and/or a different input is selected.
- Option to go into a low power mode after some time in the screen saver/screen off mode.
- Option to have the "screen saver" turn off the display output. This allows TVs to turn off automatically.
- Option to turn off the display output when playing non-video sources, which allows TV's to correctly auto-sense the inputs.
- AirDisc support. This would make the ATV a viable DVD replacement while also causing a wave of BluRay purchases on the Mac as soon as that option became available.
- AirBook SuperDrive support. This option, especially a Blu-Ray version, would be another way to turn the ATV into a "universal box".
- The sound of whatever media is playing should be left playing until the user actually selects some other source.
- Currently it remains playing until you exit the Music menu. Instead, it should continue playing until the user presses stop/pause or selects some other source with audio.
- A "play this next" feature would be extremely useful, allowing the user to queue up songs.
- There is a "repeat" selection for music, but not for videos. This would be very useful in some cases.
- Support subfolders in the Movies and TV Shows. Anyone with a reasonably large collection really needs this.
- Add searching, with auto-complete, in every list. Anyone with a large collection needs this too.
- Searching should be global... if the user is in the Music menu Search should look across all sources, they should not have to navigate to a particular source first.
- Internet radio/iTunes radio station support deserves its own menu item.
- Add iSync support to the ATV, and allow it to download/sync from cameras plugged into the USB port. For those users without a Mac or PC, this option would be extremely useful.
- ATV should be able to "stream" photos as it does with music and video.
- The slide-show should be able to span folders.
- ATV should sync iTunes visualizers and use those in place of the current "flowers" screen saver.
- Start iTunes downloads from any location; log in from your laptop or at work, and start a rental download to the ATV.
- Share YouTube bookmarks with other iTunes devices like the iPhone or Mac.
[edit] Hardware upgrades
- HDMI pass-though, allowing the ATV to act as a switch for an AV stack.
- Optionally genlock/chroma-key the inputs so they can appear live in the ATV menus.
- CEC command pass-through (defined in the HDMI standard, so make sure it works!)
- Option to turn on/off devices connected via HDMI depending on what input is selected.
- This would put DVD players to sleep if their input wasn't looked at for some period of time.
