I have some suggestions and problems that caught my eye when I started reading. There seems to be a space between a period and a ref, also I believe that the first two sections need more references. I suggest formatting the refs into two columns using {{ref|2}}. I also think the lead should be significantly expanded. Also, another thing about the lead (see WP:LEAD) the first sentence should summarize the article title, so it should sound something like "Maurice's Balkan Campaigns were a series of military expeditions conducted by emperor Maurice in an attempt to defend the Balkan from Avars and Slavs." A lead should also summarize the entire article, not just introduce the topic and should refrain from giving new information to the reader.
