Mauricio Isla is a Chilean football defender/midfielder who had a notable performance in the summer 2007 under-20 World Cup in Canada and was thereafter signed by Udinese Calcio of the first division in Italy on a 5 year contract. During the under-20 tournament Isla caught the eye with his running of the line. Like Roberto Carlos of Brazil and traditional south american full backs, Isla is a player who can both defend and attack and has great pace and stamina. [1] [2]

On March 8th, Isla played his first game as a starter for Udinese against Palermo, which ended in a 1-1 draw. For Udinese Isla has admitted he has had to adapt his style by being more conservative with his attitude. In the games he started for the Udine club he has been played in the position of left back.

Isla earnt his first full Chile caps in November 2007 in the World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Uruguay. Since Chile fields a 3-5-2 formation Isla benefits with them from being able to control the play from the left wing back position and it was his cross that met with Salas' head to equalise against Uruguay. Isla has played in the three friendlies since against Korea, Japan and Israel taking his tally to 5 caps already and his performances have been strong.
