Maungakiekie (New Zealand electorate)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maungakiekie is a Parliamentary electorate in Auckland, New Zealand.
The main suburbs which lie in this electorate are Ellerslie, Mount Wellington, Otahuhu, Te Papapa, Onehunga, Oranga and One Tree Hill (where it receives its name from).
[edit] History
The electorate was formed in 1995 from the redrawing of the boundaries of the old seats of Panmure and Onehunga, formerly held by Judith Tizard and Richard Northey (both Labour) respectively. It was held therefore to be a fairly safe Labour seat, but election night 1996 produced a remarkable result, the seat swung to favour National and Belinda Vernon rather than Richard Northey was elected.
However in election night 1999 and subsequently, Labour's Mark Gosche was elected.
