Maugli (Маугли) is the Russian spelling of Mowgli, and is the title under which Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book often appears in Russian translations. The Russian spelling reflects the original pronunciation (according to Kipling the "Mow" of Mowgli rhymes with "cow"), which is often changed in English language adaptations.
An animated movie entitled Maugli, adapted by Leonid Belokurov from Kipling's Mowgli stories and directed by Roman Davidov, was released in the Soviet Union in 1967, coincidentally the same year as Disney's animated version. An English translation was later released as The Jungle Book, aka The Adventures of Mowgli, featuring narration by Charlton Heston.
