Maude Duncan

Maude Duncan was an American newspaperwoman and a former mayor of Winslow, a community in Washington County in northwestern Arkansas.

Maude Duncan was born to a well-to-do family in Virginia. There she met and married her husband and followed him to Winslow, where he started a newspaper; the Winslow American.

In 1919, her husband died. She continued his work by writing, editing, selling advertising, and publishing the newspaper. This she did with a manual printing press.
[edit] Petticoat Government
In 192X, she ran for mayor and was elected, along with an all-woman government. It was the first in America and stirred up quite a bit of controversy among the citizens. The all-woman government became known as the "Petticoat" government.
