[edit] Userspace layout

Hi, I was bold and gave you a virtual copy of my talk page header style. I changed the color so that both are somewhat unique, hid the archive box (you have no talk archives), and removed links relevant only for an admin. If you like it, I'll put a copy of a similar version for your main userpage into your sandbox. Sound good? :) Nihiltres(t.l) 17:16, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, Nihiltres. It looks great. You're right about the archive - I don't need that just yet! With regards to putting a copy of the main user page into my sandbox, I'd really appreciate that. Thankyou again -- Matthew Edwards 21:50, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
Done. :) I cleared out most of the userpage's content and added general instructions for use in the text. It shouldn't be too hard from there, but you can come to me with any questions about the layout. Nihiltres(t.l) 02:32, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] the [show] and [hide] links

{{helpme}}How do I make the templates always be showing, instead of having to click on the [show] link to see them. I'd rather be able to click [hide] if I don't want to see the content.

Adding ".NavContent{ display: block ! important; }" (without quotes) to your monobook.css will cause some of them to show, but not those with "class=autocollapse", which I think will need a JavaScript solution. Try asking on the technical village pump.--Werdan7T @ 01:13, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Merging

And you got the San Franciscans merge finished in addition to volunteering to do the Mexican American/Chicano ones. I was hoping that somebody else would get to it if I put it off long enough. Pairadox 12:28, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Haha, I may just leave it for you, then. I wouldn't want to take anything away from you -- Matthew Edwards 21:00, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
No, no, go ahead. I wouldn't want anybody to think that I have ownership issues with the articles. Image:Smile_eye.png Pairadox 21:12, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Okay, I give. I can't top that. (But you still get to do the merge.) Pairadox 21:33, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
Did it. And I merged List of Chicano poets into the list, too -- Matthew Edwards 23:55, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Degrassi: The Next Generation

Hi. I've noticed you added {{Notability|episode|date=August 2007}} and {{Cleanup|date=August 2007}} tags to the episode articles of Degrassi: The Next Generation. At Weddings, Parties, Anything (D:TNG episode), I've rewritten the entire page, and removed the tags. Please let me know, however, if more needs doing. If the page is fine, I am going to rewrite the episode articles of all the D:TNG episodes. -- Matthew Edwards 07:08, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi, the various Degrassi episode articles are all due to be listed for a review; see: WP:TV-REVIEW. It looks like you've addressed the clean-up issue but not the notability issue. Basically, individual episodes of tv shows are not notable and even if you clean all of the Degrassi episode articles up they will probably end up redirected to the LOE page. See the guideline at WP:EPISODE and consider whether you really feel that the individual episode articles can be established as notable. There may be specific episodes where you can find good sources (not tv.com and imdb.com) and I would recommend that you focus your efforts on those. --Jack Merridew 12:04, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
I don't understand why, though. If this is to be the case, surely every single episode guide for every single TV show has to be {{notablility}} tagged. Those at Lost, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Desperate Housewives, should also be tagged, for instance. I'm not having a go at you, but who's to say what is notable and what isn't. (Or is that what the review is for?) Where would I go to put my two-cent's worth to keep the D"TNG episode pages? Thank you -- Matthew Edwards 17:12, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
It's a question of citing reliable 3rd party sources and writing articles that are more than a plot summary. Most tv show episode articles should be tagged, reviewed, and most will end up redirected. The fact that it has not all happened is simply due to the fact that there are many such episode articles extant and there are many fans who like their shows. Think for a moment about how many shows there are on how many networks in how many countries and start multiplying numbers together and you'll realize that an article per episode will result in millions of 'articles'. See the links I gave above for policies and examples of 'good' episode articles. best, --Jack Merridew 10:29, 5 September 2007 (UTC) (who is just too busy for this issue at the moment)
Wonderful... There's not that many 3rd party sources for information that are not fan pages. Oh well! -- Matthew Edwards | talk | Contribs | (Offline) 03:30, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
that is the essence of their non-notability. --Jack 12:36, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

I see that you've "listed" these episode on the WP:TV-REVIEW page, but have not really followed the format used which entails notifying a lot of talk pages to give interested editors a heads-up. The tv-review process is rather back-logged at the moment, but I'll open a formal discussion tomorrow - if you don't do so yourself. --Jack Merridew 12:36, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I didn't list them in "upcoming reviews", I only added the discussion page cos no one else had. If you don't mind I'll leave it to you to do what needs doing, you seem to know what that entails. -- Matthew Edwards | talk | Contribs | (Offline) 17:15, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] TV Ratings

{{helpme}}I'm doing a couple of articles about TV episodes and have two questions on the same subject: The first one I have is, What is the name of the company (and the website) who keep track of TV ratings in Canada, like Nielsen Ratings do for America, and BARB in the UK.

Second, I've been looking at the Nielson website for the ratings of specific TV episodes from a year ago, they don't seem to have it. Is there anywhere on the internet who archives this information, and for the Canadian rating people, too? Thanks -- Matthew Edwards 21:22, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Degrassi list

Hello! Perhaps you could just move the Degrassi list to the correct area? It should probably be nominated for Featured list at Featured list candidates rather than for Featured article at Featured article candidates. That's all I meant - if you want to repost my comment, you can, but it is best to move the nomination now, I think. Awadewit | talk 05:05, 30 September 2007 (UTC) Ah, I understand you now. Thankyou. -- Matthew Edwards | talk | Contribs 05:09, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] FL Main page proposal

You either nominated a WP:FLC or closed such a nomination this year. As such, you are the type of editor whose opinion I am soliciting. We now have over 400 featured lists and seem to be promoting in excess of 30 per month of late (41 in August and 42 in September). When Today's featured article (TFA) started (2004-02-22), they only had about 200 featured articles and were barely promoting 20 new ones per month. I think the quality of featured lists is at least as good as the quality of featured articles was when they started appearing on the main page. Thus, I am ready to open debate on a proposal to institute a List of the Day on the main page with nominations starting November 1, 2007, voting starting December 1, 2007 and main page appearances starting January 1, 2008. For brevity, the proposal page does not discuss the details of eventual main page content, but since the work has already been done, you should consider this proposal assuming the eventual main page will resemble either an excerpted list format or an abbreviated text format. The proposal page does not debate whether starting with weekly list main page entries would be better than daily entries. However, I suspect persons in favor of weekly lists are really voicing opinions against lists on the main page since neither TFA nor Picture of the day started as weekly endeavors, to the best of my knowledge. Right now debate seems to be among support for the current selective democratic/consensus based proposal, a selective dictatorial approach like that used at WP:TFA or a non-selective first in line/calendar approach like that used at WP:POTD. See the List of the Day proposal and comment at WP:LOTDP and its talk page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by TonyTheTiger (talkcontribs) 19:41, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:D-TNGs05e05.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:D-TNGs05e05.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 15:42, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] LOTD proposal

You have nominated a recently successful WP:FL. There have been two recent proposals to begin a List of the Day feature on the main page, which have both received majorities but have not been approved as overwhelming support sufficient to change the main page. WP:LOTDP is a new proposal to try to get the ball rolling based on the original proposal. You can voice your thoughts on its talk page. Basically, what the proposal entails is attempting to run an official trial, and then vote after the trial run on whether to change the main page. Support to run a trial requires much less consensus than support to change the main page. Should we succeed at eventually getting such a feature on the main page it would tentatively look like this. Whether or not you support an experimental trial or not you should come discuss the matter at WP:LOTDP's talk page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 21:26, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sandbox user warning templates

Matthew, I need to comment out the relevant wiki markup on the pages in your sandbox using Template:Templatesnotice, because it causes those pages to appear in Category:User warning templates, which consists of templates that have been standardized as part of WP:UW. Their presence there makes them targets for deletion as we remove obsolete templates, and I want to prevent your sandbox from getting caught in that. I hope you don't mind. Cheers. [edit] Featured List of the Day Experiment

There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. You may submit multiple lists for consideration.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 18:00, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Degrassi Season pages

Saw the post over at the Episode list talk page, though I'd offer some thoughts since you mentioned wondering which list format to use. :) I personally think the Simpson and Smallville style would work better for Degrassi than the Lost format. Smallville's lists, in particular, are rather nice, except for the slightly too long intro. Hopefully part of the effort would include better episode summaries that actually summarize each episode instead of just being teasers?

Good luck with the effort! I know it will be quite a bit of work, but considering the length of the show, I think it will be worth it and its a much better and preferred solution to having individual episode pages as well :) Collectonian (talk) 03:54, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, I haven't looked at Smallville's, but if it's similar to The Simpson's, I prefer that, too.
Take a look at Degrassi: The Next Generation (season 1), are the episode recaps not to standard? I always thought an episode summary was a teaser.. and isn't that what the Lost and The Simpsons season articles have?
A good episode summary should, ideally, give a summary of the whole story, covering all important parts. A teaser really doesn't give the reader any more info than a TV guide :P Then again, looking at some other lists, I see it goes both ways, so may be a personal preference thing. Collectonian (talk) 04:18, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Which articles do you think have good summaries, rather than teasers, just for refernce sake? -- Matthew Edwards | talk | Contribs 04:24, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Hmm. List of Trinity Blood episodes is one (though its one I did, so probably biased LOL). List of X-Men episodes is fairly good with short summaries that still manage to cover the whole episode. Looking at most of the lists, though, almost all the FAs seem to be teaser types (though I haven't seen most of those shows so can't say for 100% sure). Well pooh...never mind me then :P Collectonian (talk) 04:34, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] League of Copyeditors roll call

Greetings from the League of Copyeditors. Your name is listed on our members page, but we are unsure how many of the people listed there are still active contributors to the League's activities. If you are still interested in participating in the work of the League, please follow the instructions at the members page to add your name to the active members list. Once you have done that, you might want to familiarise yourself with the new requests system, which has replaced the old /proofreading subpage. As the old system is now deprecated, the main efforts of the League should be to clear the substantial backlog which still exists there.
The League's services are in as high demand as ever, as evinced by the increasing backlog on our requests pages, both old and new. While FA and GA reviewers regularly praise the League's contributions to reviewed articles, we remain perennially understaffed. Fulfilling requests to polish the prose of Wikipedia's highest-profile articles is a way that editors can make a very noticeable difference to the appearance of the encyclopedia. On behalf of the League, if you do consider yourself to have left, I hope you will consider rejoining; if you consider yourself inactive, I hope you will consider returning to respond to just one request per week, or as many as you can manage. Merry Christmas and happy editing, The League of Copyeditors.

[edit] Re: Degrassi: The Next Generation

  1. The italics-I've seen Degrassi alone italicized like this in other media, that's why I said this.
  2. The cast section is indeed extremely confusing. Think about it like a person who has never seen Degrassi before. As I said, I'm a closet Degrassi fan, so I understood it to some degree. Even I had to read it several times to get the full gist of it, though. The section basically throws a bunch of names and seasons at the reader all at once. It's information overload. I had a similar problem with an article I got up to GA status, Last of the Summer Wine, a show which also has a large cast and used a table to describe the decade in this case that each non-main cast member joined the series. Whether you use a table or not is up to you. However, it is bad form to simply have seven different paragraphs with a group of names in each paragraph.
  3. For the first run broadcast table suggestion, see Smallville (TV series)#Reception.
  4. You're probably right about the syndication information. It could probably be combined with something else. With the stations, it could become overwhelming as you're inviting everyone in the US with a station that airs reruns to add their station to the list. (I know that my local station back in the states that airs reruns is not on the list.)
  5. Just a suggestion, for some tidbits on casting, check the DVD special features for the first couple seasons. I remember it having something on casting.

Hope this helps. Cheers! Redfarmer (talk) 09:01, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] AWB

I saw your question about the AWB reference tags. If you go to the (2) Set options and check general fixes, then AWB should fix what you are asking. I am pretty sure the programmers implemented that feature in the last release. If it is not then you should bring it to the AWB bug page along with your example. I have been working on cleaning up the AWB manual the last few days. So I ask what is so confusing? And how can we make it better? AWB is really a program that can do so much that it's hard to document it. It looks like they would implement a feature and forget to put it in the manual. I just asked about the subst: section and they really could not explain it to me either. Jeanenawhitney (talk) 17:08, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

A-ha! You're right, it did fix it! I've only had AWB for seven days, or so, and when I looked at the manual, I thought it very confusing. I noticed you said you planned to fix the manual up, and that it "confused the heck" out of you when you started. To be honest, I hadn't rechecked the manual since then to see if it had been worked on, but I will do that now. I'm also thinking of copying the content of an article into my sandbox, and play with AWB on it, until I figure out what everything does.
The only way I can describe the use of "subst:" is to say that if you wanted to put, for example, a userbox on your userspace and you typed {{Subst:User:Matthewedwards/Userboxes/Whangarei}}, you'd get
(Image removed for style and formatting reasons)
and it would stay that way forever even if I changed it to say "This user lives in Lancaster, California". However, if you typed {{User:Matthewedwards/Userboxes/Whangarei}} without the "subst:", you would see every change I made to it. I don't know if this helps you any for the manual, but that's the basic principal behind it.
I do have a question about it when an article doesn't have any categories. Is there a way AWB to find the article when that happens? -- Matthew Edwards | talk | Contribs 17:55, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
I have another question. When I load up the categories, for instance, Category:Degrassi, why doesn't it bring up the subcategories Category:Degrassi characters, Category:Degrassi: The Next Generation, Category:WikiProject Degrassi and Category:Degrassi images? -- Matthew Edwards | talk | Contribs 18:15, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Proposed merger

Hello...

You proposed merging List of European countries and their capitals with List of countries in Europe. I thought about this when first creating List of countries in Europe. The reason for not adding information to the List of European countries and their capitals article is due to the rather high volume of 'defacto independent countries'. My thoughts were that given the lack of consistent information regrading names, the information that would appear in the article would be less complete than that of the information for (excuse the lack of a better phrase) non-defacto independent countries. At worst, the information is temporary.

Perhaps the best solution is to take the capital names from List of European countries and their capitals, match them with the corresponding countries already listed in List of countries in Europe. The remainder of information could then be turned into a mirror article of List of countries in Europe with the title List of unrecognized independent countries in Europe. List of European countries and their capitals can then be deleted as superfluous.

What are your thoughts on this?

--The €T/C 12:13, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi. One of the reasons I proposed a merge was because there was an unneccessarily high number of "List of European country" articles. There was List of European countries before I redirected it to List of countries in Europe; European countries, which was created as a redirect page, and has pointed to seven different pages in its lifetime, and the List of European countries and capitals page.
Addendum Out of the three articles that weren't simply redirects, List of countries in Europe was the best and had the most information, which is why I redirected them all and proposed that particular merger.
Honestly, I don't know if a mirror article of the defacto countries would be better, or just a separate section after the "real" countries. List of countries, a featured article, lists all countries, identifying the differences using bold text for those with general international recognition, bold and italic text for those lacking general international recognition, and regular text for other non-state countries. Either way, List of European countries and their capitals should probably be deleted rather than kept as a redirect page, as who is going to be typing that into their search bar?! - Matthew Edwards | talk | Contribs 17:17, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi. I started merging the info. Can you have a look at it and let me know what you think? List of countries in Europe
Cheers. The €T/C 21:37, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Looks all right. I also started something, based upon {{Infobox country}}, here, and here. Unfortunately, I'm having problems with rowspan on the third column, and it's taking a bit of time to think how to fix it. -- Matthew Edwards | talk | Contribs 22:46, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
Those pages look interesting. What are your intentions for them?- to replace the current country boxes?
Cheers. The €T/C 22:50, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
Nothing as of right now. I was just playing around, seeing what could be done. The Country infobox has the fields already set in place, whereas the way I'm currently doing it the fields and results have to be put in manually, which is a pain. Then there's the thing of having to remove cells for information that wouldn't appear on other countries, such as "EU accession". That obviously would be redundant on an African country, but then it also messes up the layout of the box. And like I said, the third column is giving me problems with rowspan. It shifts the entire table out of sync. -- Matthew Edwards | talk | Contribs 23:01, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
OK. It is done. The list of capitals article shouldn't be deleted just yet. I'm going to put a section in at the bottom of the article separating out the non-sovereign countries and adding the countries that are unrecognized (as per your suggestion- BTW).
Cheers. The €T/C 03:05, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
I like how you put the native name of the capital cities, especially for places like Jersey, which I didn't even know had a native language. PS: Don't forget Sealand. :D -- Matthew Edwards | talk | Contribs 06:01, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
Well, it is all done. The merger is complete and now the other article can be deleted and redirected. Also, can you remove the merger proposal from the article? And yes, Sealand is in there. <shrugs>It fits the description.</shrugs>
Cheers. The €T/C 09:32, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
Looks a-okay. Should Sealand be placed in the list with the other unrecognised territories, or under a new section headed "Micronations"? -- Matthew Edwards | talk | Contribs 22:26, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
I thought about that and decided against, because then Vatican City and Monaco would need their own sub-section as recognised states. It may become a little confusing to further categorise states in this manner. All in all, I think it is complete.
Cheers. The €T/C 14:16, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
One more thing- I thought it might be a good idea to copy this thread to the discussion page of the article. What do you think?

Oh my gosh! I didn't notice I'd even done it. I've removed the parameter. My apologies. -- Matthew | talk | Contribs 20:54, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Mazin Elsadig - Degrassi character Damian Hayes

Do you think you could create a Degrassi character page for Damian Hayes? While there is a Damian Haye listed here, it's a real person, not the Degrassi character and I think he's a athlete who lives in Europe. There are character pages for two other new characters, Holly J. Sinclair and Jane V. so I find it weird this character doesn't have his own page yet. Robinepowell (talk) 03:02, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Damien Hayes (Degrassi) is the page, and Damien Haze is a redirect to that page. Actually, I wouldn't have created a page, as I think none of the characters are notable enough to have an article on Wikipedia. It's not to collect masses of junk and crufty information. And none of the other articles are good enough to be here either. They're far too plotty, they're in-universe, and read like a fansite. IMO, all the D:TNG character pages would be better off being merged into List of Degrassi: The Next Generation characters page. -- Matthew | talk | Contribs 03:07, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
You've misspelled his first name and that needs to be fixed. I checked CTV and it's DamiAn. [1] Robinepowell (talk) 08:05, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
I didn't create it, just pointed it out to you. You could always move the article. I'm going to bed, now. Night! -- Matthew | talk | Contribs 08:30, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Let me just point out that it's considered bad form to delete and change people's talk pages, even if they are your own comments. Replies to conversations should also be indented with a colon (:) at the beginning of the new text.
I'm guessing what happened with the Haze/Hayes thing is that someone heard the name Hayes on the show, and thought it was spelled H-A-Z-E. When it was clarified that it was spelled H-A-Y-E-S, the article was WP:Renamed. It seems that they didn't know it was also D-A-M-I-A-N, not D-A-M-I-E-N, which is why it needs renaming again now. Like I said, this wasn't me, and I'm not awake enough to do it myself right now, because it involves fixing Wikipedia:Double redirects. Goodnight! -- Matthew | talk | Contribs 08:44, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Re-indent
What does it matter if I delete my own words? I changed my mind and decided to add something else. If I knew who originally created the Damian Hayes page I would ask them to change it. I don't so you're it. Maybe later today? Robinepowell (talk) 19:28, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Because it's frowned upon. Anyway, you could go {{sofixit}}, I don't WP:OWN the Degrassi related articles. -- Matthew | talk | Contribs 03:52, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Re your recent edits to Degrassi: The Next Generation, Everything you just wrote was wrong - Mistycyn wasn't recurring from season 1, she guested in 1 episode. She was recurring in season 2. She still had star billing in season 5, she didn't leave at the end of season 4. Daniel Clarke left at the end of season 6. He can't have left at the end of season 7 - it hasn't ended yet. Amadna Stepto doesn't need wikilinking more than once. -- Matthew | talk | Contribs 06:04, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

How can Daniel Clark have left when he's still in the opening credits of Seaven 7? Robinepowell (talk) 07:28, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Degrassi character Cailtin Ryan

I changed it around. She appeared in one episode in Season 5 and that's her ONLY appearence until now.

She recieved star billing the entire season, though.

Also the characters of Toby and Ashley are recurring so how is that wrong? There aren't any individual photos of them in the opening credits and they aren't shown in the group photo. Robinepowell (talk) 07:27, 13 February 2008 (UTC) Because after a discussion with the user who did the GA review, it was decided to remove a lot of the information in the cast section, discussing only the changes to main roles. Melissa McIntyre (Ashley) had left the series at the end of season 4, and when she returned in season 6, she was given a recurring role. Hope this explains everything. -- Matthew | talk | Contribs 08:33, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:DTNG season 1.jpg

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:DTNG season 1.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 17:59, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Degrassi dvd release

Hey Matthew, sorry I missed your note on the FLC. I'd definitely go for placing it after the episode overview. Just my opinion but it's logical for me to see the release of the series after the episode synopses. All the best. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:10, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Of course. I'll do it "interfrastically". The Rambling Man (talk) 19:16, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, and you're right, in my enthusiasm to keep a clean talk page I overlooked your remark about the episode template for which I apologise! I'd look into it further tomorrow and let you know what I think. One thing I've noticed - IE7 is crap at rendering the templates. At work I use Windows XP (I'm sorry, I have to be sick) with an overall 3200 x 1200 res pair of monitors. At home I'm a simple iBooker with Mac OS 10.5 and Safari. I know! At home we just used to do 15 question written spelling tests once a week in English. Here they home school kids so they can focus on the spelling. I have to say though, I watched the final for the first time last year, and it was incredibly nailbiting! I just felt sorry for the kids who came in 4th, 3rd and 2nd.. I just imagined them getting home and their parents telling them they were such failures and slapping them around the house! Your welcome with regards to the review. The "reasonably well written" is part of the template I use when reviewing GANs, and in this case does not give the quality of the article justice. Also, you'll be pleased to know that I am passing the article, and will be doing the appropriate work to promote the article on the talk page shortly. Regards, -MBK004 23:32, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Indeed, am going through them now. I can only comment on prose and references, though, because I'm unfamiliar with all the technical requirements of tables and so on for lists. You wrote: "As does Image:Www.uncfsu.jpg, Image:NCCU seal.gif, Image:Uncwlogo.gif, Image:WCU Seal.gif, and Image:Athletic ram color full.jpg. Some of them don't have any rationale and will find themselves deleted eventually."
I added Non-free/fair use image rationale for List of public universities in North Carolina to each one. Does this satisfy everything?
You wrote:"The free images should be moved over to the Commons"
So I should transfer all of the other photos to Commons, than transfer them back?
You wrote:"With the number of non-free images in use, it fails to meet the third criteria, and the remaining images, while looking nice, are so small that they're not worth including anyway."
Should I just delete the photo column? If the column does get deleted, would this help change your opinion on FL worthiness?

That is everything for right now. Photos are not my strong suit on Wikipedia, so I am still trying to learn everything about them. Please respond either on the FLC page, or on my talkpage. Thanks, PGPirate 00:31, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

I think I am going to yank the photo column, with the hopes that it can be replaced, once fixed. Can the UNC System seal stay? Thanks, PGPirate 00:56, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up. I didn't realize that a nominator should not do that. I used to use the checkmark, but didnt know about the {{done}} template, which is much easier. PGPirate 12:36, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Notability of Clyde May

A tag has been placed on Clyde May requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Steven J. Anderson (talk) 01:51, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Notability of James Crehan

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on James Crehan, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because James Crehan seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting James Crehan, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. [edit] A.B. Cursey

Can you be a more careful while creating new articles? The stub template should be below the "References" section, not above the "References" section. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 00:21, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Apologies. I haven't created any before, and couldn't find the rule which said where to place it. -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 00:23, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Floyd Eiler

Sorry about the speedy nom, now removed -- just curious as to how this office is notable per WP:N? – ukexpat (talk) 00:47, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

External references in reliable sources. I can also go downtown to the LA county library, where the Los Angeles Herald is archived and look for old articles. -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 00:48, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
OK I accept there are sources reporting their deaths, but is that the sole reason for their notability, the fact that they died in the line of duty?  – ukexpat (talk) 00:59, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps create one article that listed the less notable ones en masse would be better than a single article for each, which will require more work to check for notability and magnetize deletion requests? - Owlmonkey (talk) 01:03, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Uh... yeah basically, for right now. -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 01:04, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
And I am, User:Matthewedwards/Sandbox/List of LAPD officers killed in the line of duty here. I'd like to get it to WP:FLC eventually, but that would mean wikilinking each person for Wikipedia:Featured list criteria 1a1. Unless it slides through on 1a3. -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 01:06, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
I think Owlmonkey's idea is a sensible - the two line stubs will probably be Afd'd in due course.  – ukexpat (talk) 01:23, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
OK, I'll go down that route for now then. Thanks for the suggestions. -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 01:31, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

I don't think so. The GimmeBot handles some tasks, such as adding the closure box and updating the article history, you just have to wait for Gimmetrow to come online and run it (he's usually on in the evening, so it'll likely be done within a few hours). As for the mathematics list, I saw there was some movement but I figured there were quite a few large issues, but I'll reopen it since it hasn't yet been officially closed. -- Scorpion0422 19:51, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

I didn't realise Gimmebot adds the closure box. I thought it was down you or CrzyCheetah, and the bot updates the article and talk page. -- Matthew 19:53, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Hey i noticed your on the vol peer review. It says in brackets albums and singles. Does that mean everything else is off limits? Theres quite a mammoth article i would appreciate for help with? If you go beyond albums and singles you might be interested. Either way could you send me a message at my talk page. cheers. Realist2 (talk) 20:06, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

OK basically, a few months ago the Michael Jackson article was put up for FA. It failed and i made all the corrections suggested. A few months latter I contacted one of those reviews who failed it informing them that "it had been improved and was it worth renominating". She agreed it had improved significantly but suggested i seek a peer review first. Obviously MJ is a complex article, its not only the music, 40% of the article is about his private life, its a mammoth task, but if it were to get to FA it would be an accomplishment any wiki person would be proud of. Realist2 (talk) 22:33, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] CTV/Shirley Douglas

If you're going to link to CTV, you should make sure you know how to link it properly. There is more then one CTV.

Also when you moved all the info on Season 7 over, you forgot about Shirley Douglas who's guest appearence is Bust a Move Part 2 and airs tommorow in the U.S. Her guest announcement was made last September, long before Kylie Mingou's. Shirley Douglas is Canadian to boot. Robinepowell (talk) 19:36, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

CTV was linked to CTV Television Network. Kylie Minogue isn't appearing - Natasha Bedingfield is, as verified by the references that were already there. Apologies for accidentally removing Shirley Douglas, though. I reverted your edit because some sentences were turned into gobbledygook, but the bit about Shirley should be put back. -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 19:42, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
No worries Matthew, just keep me up to speed with what's happening. All the best. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:02, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
Oh well! Keep me in touch. And as for the FLCR etc, I'm probably opting out for good now. Need to keep my cool. I've been accused of making a point, I think it somewhat ironic that because an NHL fan couldn't get FL he's going to attempt to delist seven existing FL's which saw no objection on these grounds during their FLCs. So I need to have a cup of tea and worry about other things! The Rambling Man (talk) 16:54, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
Not a chance, I'll be sticking around FLC for a while yet! No, just these particular debates. The medal of honor stuff, this season issue and Arsenal players, I'm happy to sit back and see the conclusion now although I note that the debate has been going on some time no with no sign of closure! As a 'crat I'd be closing it as no consensus but then I'm naturally biased am I not?! The Rambling Man (talk) 17:07, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
I don't know what we're supposed to do. Even if complete lists were possible they'd be unmanageable. Splitting them is useless because their sortability goes to ruin, unless you sort them by criteria such as appearances. A rename on this basis was rejected. Looks like WP:FOOTBALL are being picked on! Anyway, as I said, time for tea... ! The Rambling Man (talk) 17:17, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Degrassi

I decline to speedy the list of episodes. Although you seem to have been the principal creator of that page, you are not the only contributor. You say the material is better presented in the main article, but I do not see it there. What you are essentially proposing is a destructive merge, and this must obtain explicit consensus. If it has been obtained, please show me where it is & I'll proceed in accordance with that--otherwise, take it to afd. DGG (talk) 00:49, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Hey Matthew. Just try to stay calm. Your approach so far is correct, attempting to initiate communication with her and going about your business in a level headed manner. I've asked her to consider her approach so we'll have to see what happens from there. Again, let me know should she cause further disruption. As for the LAPD list, let me have a look and I'll get back to you. All the best. The Rambling Man (talk) 07:54, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] LAPD list

Hi Matthew, I've had a quick look at the list. Firstly I'm not sure that being killed in the line of duty alone will be sufficient to meet WP:BIO, hence the deletions you've witnessed. So, with that in mind, should an officer meet WP:BIO then I'd definitely encourage an article to be written. If not then I'm not clear how big and ungainly the table will become should you put the footnotes in the table itself. I personally don't have a big problem with loads of footnotes, there's stacks of information in the table already so you may just overload it if you cram the notes in there too. Plus it'd make the article even longer as your notes column would probably only occupy 10% of the width of the article versus the 100% they currently have. Hope some of that makes sense (I'm still half-asleep!). All the best, The Rambling Man (talk) 08:06, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Degrassi Episodes

In case you didn't notice, the DVD section is already listed on the main page of Degrassi. I've deleted for two reasons from the other section. First most of the dates are wrong and secondly that section of Degrassi is for the episodes, not DVDs. Thirdly why would you have the DVDs listed twice?

The titles, they have always been two parters, not just "in syndication", I know because I've watched them here and my satellite guide listed them as two parters, not to mention my (Canadian) TV Guide when they aired. Also there's the fact that when it's an hour long episode it is always mentioend to be two parts and titled that way. I don't why you would think otherwise.

[edit] Peer review request

I'm wonder if you would peer review the Alan Kulwicki article some day when you have time. It passed GA without comment. It's my first attempt at FA. I'm concerned about the "brilliant prose" part of FA, not the technical (car racing) aspects of the article. I had User:4u1e and others review the technical aspects of the article. He feels too close to the topic to give a fair prose review. Kulwicki is dead for over a decade, so there's no big rush. Thanks! Royalbroil 02:55, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Degrassi

Hi, sorry for any confusion. This is what I meant:

Template:Scroll box

Quote: "This template should not be used in main article space, as it renders any content obscured within the template unprintable. This is especially true with text content, such as citations, according to a June 2007 discussion."

And this was the June 2007 discussion:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Templates_for_deletion/Log/2007_June_11#Template:Scrollref

I know you used a code instead of the actual template, but they are the same, and we are not supposed to use it in the article namespace, unless I;m mistaken in which you can correct me. Thanks! (and I'll stop rambling now), ‽² (Talk²/Contributions²) 18:01, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Copyright violation?

I ran across User:Matthewedwards/Sandbox/List_of_7th_Heaven_episodes and noticed that it said that it was a copyright violation and that you were working to remove the offending material. However, I note that your only edit to the page was on 2008-03-20 even though the page has been in userspace since September 2007. This sounds like a WP:CSD#G12 deletion, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt because I can't find the deleted page; however, please explain how the article can be in your userspace at all if it is a copyright violation? Thanks.--Doug.(talk contribs) 18:19, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

I was going to work on it, got sidetracked, came back to it, and posted the current version that is at List of 7th Heaven episodes. This shouldn't still be here and so I've {{db-user}}ed it. Thanks for reminding me. -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 23:19, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Degrassi Summaries

I'd like to leave them, it gives fans a chance to remember what happened in which episode. Is there some reason why the summaries should be removed? Robinepowell (talk) 20:37, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

There are a couple of reasons:
  1. there is no point repeating the same information in two places,
  2. the page is extremely long, size-wise, and
  3. Wikipedia is not a fansite. http://www.degrassitngho.com is, and a very good one at that. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, with encyclopaedic content, and should not pander to the wishes of fans, even if Wikipedia is one of the sites they come to for the information. The link to the relevent season is only one click away, anyway.

[edit] You've never been hated on by Free Republic?

Believe me (and I speak from personal experience), if you ever read anything they "report" on where you know the facts behind it, you'll think you've slid into a parallel universe or something. --Orange Mike | Talk 01:58, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

I've never really used Free Republic, except for the three times I discussed with JzG. And for that they hadn't reported, simply copy/pasted articles which no longer feature on the original published website. -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 02:04, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Production history of The Devil Wears Prada

Just because it's been over a year since I put it there and haven't acted on it doesn't mean it shouldn't be done. The article is entirely too long as it is ... and I do mean to do it soon (the GA nomination has been a big spur to that). I can understand pulling the split tag over that, but if you have some reason why you think it shouldn't be done, I'd like to read it. Daniel Case (talk) 18:10, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

I would say that having a template like that would make the article quick fail GA. I also do not think that splitting it off is a "necessary action". No other GA or FA film article has done this, for one thing. Secondly, the section goes too deeply into "unnecessary details" (from GA?) The Preproduction subsection is one paragraph. This could easily be merged into another. Casting and Acting subsections could be slimmed down and merged into the Cast section. There are other things, and if I were to review it (which is the reason I came to the page in the first place), I would probably fail it, as I think the changes needed to get it to GA are too vast to be done in one week. It's a shame, too, 'cause I like the movie, so I'd like to see the article become one of greatness, too. -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 02:16, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
The section at Talk:The Devil Wears Prada (film)#Notes to GA reviewer doesn't look good to any potential reviewer either. Most will probably think it should be done before taking to GAC. By the way, has the article been peer reviewed? -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 02:18, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
Yes it has been peer reviewed. Someone else made the nomination, which is why I put the note in. The split was discussed and approved on WT:FILM over a year ago ... the consensus was that it was going to happen to some film article sooner or later (consider that with the new DVD, there's enough good, sourceable stuff on Blade Runner to justify a similar article there. I had intended to split it, then nominate it for GA myself when I was damn good and ready ... I was so burned out after having put so much effort into it (On the other hand, I think it's rather a compliment when someone else nominates an article you've put so much into instead of yourself. Only one of the GAs (Jacobson v. United States) I claim credit for was my own nomination. But I suppose having my hand forced isn't such a bad thing). As it is, if I were reviewing it I'd fail it on the length issue. Daniel Case (talk) 02:45, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
Of course it is. Someone nominated an article I'd heavily re-written. It failed, but is now a GA. GAC suggests it's not a good idea to promote an article you've worked on but it doesn't say anything about failing if you wished to do that. Note that as the discussion occurred over a year ago, opinions on separating it into another article may be different now. The PR was over a year ago, too. Another one wouldn't do any harm. -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 03:02, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. I'd prefer to leave it up to an impartial reviewer ... having done enough GA review myself I believe that process should be kept taint-free (Despite the GA promotions of three articles I've worked on heavily from the NY roads project, I am a little troubled that they were promoted by other editors from the US roads project. I don't feel New York State Route 32 is as complete and comprehensive as I would like it to be, for instance). I thanked the nominator for the compliment, but explained the situation. He's a rather new editor and may not have perfectly understood the GA standards. Still, it would be up to him to withdraw the nomination. I went through the article with a pen yesterday and, apart from the separation (that section got as long as it did because all the filmmakers are surprisingly forthcoming, both on the DVD commentary and in interviews, about explaining why specific production and creative decisions were made, and I think that information is encyclopedic. Maybe not all of it, but most of it. I will resubmit the question to WT:FILM, but I don't think consensus will have changed. And another peer review wouldn't hurt either, you're right). Daniel Case (talk) 15:13, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Peer review request

Hello. I'm contacting you per the suggestions of the Peer Review page as you have listed yourself as someone interested in reviewing films. I overhauled the article on David Lynch's Mulholland Dr. within the past week, and added a lot of information in a short period of time. [edit] Peer Review Request for Slipknot album

Hello! I was wondering if you could do a peer review/copy edit on Slipknot (album), it was failed as a GA becuase it "needs a copy-edit and the reception section was too short". That was pretty much all they said, we cannot find any more reviews to add to the reception section, as many sites use the same review, copy and pasted from the All Music Guide. They didn't leave any suggestions on which sections needed concentrated on, I was disappointed with how vague they were, despite my efforts to find out what else they thought needed done. If you're too busy let me know, although I would appreciate it if you knew anyone else who might be willing to do a review. Thank You! Blackngold29 21:53, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, you can leave them on the talk page, that would be great. Thanks! Blackngold29 01:28, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
Hey thanks! We probably should've requested a review before putting it up for GA. You gave good in depth descriptions of what needs to be done, which really helps, shouldn't take too long to get them fixed. It's not a big deal, but if you have any spare time would you mind taking a look at Slipknot (band), it is a GA, but has not been promoted to FA status as we had hoped. You don't have to do an all out review, as I don't expect too many things to be wrong, but any small suggestions would help. Thanks again! Blackngold29 04:06, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
No rush at all, whenever you can get to it. Thanks! Blackngold29 04:22, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
It seems that User:SkyllaLaFey has begun to work on Slipknot (band) in his sandbox. We contacted him about a month ago and thought he had forgotten, but it seems he has remembered. So I would recommend going there to see it when you go to look over it; I'll let you know if he moves it back to the regular page. I left a few more comments on Talk:Slipknot (album) about sections I think should be merged, I was wondering what you think. Thanks! Blackngold29 19:20, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Degrassi DVDs

Again I'd like to know why the DVDs are listed under the episode section and with the wrong release dates for Canada. There's already a seperate section for DVDs which can be found from the list on the main page which reflects the right release dates for the Canadian DVD releases. Robinepowell (talk) 04:18, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Please provide evidence, in the form of links to reliable websites which show that the release dates for the Canadian discs are incorrect.
The dates at the main page, and on each season page reflect what is given here.
The article is FEATURED, and follows the style of all other featured episode lists.
It follows the style from the Television Wikiproject
It is a parent article to each season page. It gives an over-view of what is given in more detail at those pages.
Please don't delete content again, and please continue the discussion at the talk page for the article, where I will now copy this thread. -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 04:26, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

It's supposed to be a section for episodes and yet you continually insist on adding DVDs with the WRONG DATES!!!! WHY?????? The DVDs are listed in another place more acurately, a place I think is better for them.

Why do you want the DVDs listed with the "episode overview". As for the wrong dates why not go to http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/shows/Degrassi-Generation/4977 and see for yourself. The only time that we Canadians had a different release date was Season 1. Robinepowell (talk) 18:35, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Please do not discuss this with me here any more. Take it to the article's talk page. -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 19:27, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] List of Degrassi: The Next Generation episodes

I've reported Robin for the 3RR violation and her continuing to remove the table for no other reason than her claim that the Canadian dates are wrong. However, I can not undo her last removal without possibly violating 3RR so can you revert when you get a chance? Collectonian (talk) 06:45, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

I'm surprised 3RR didn't block, but at least the list is safe for awhile. Following the Dispute Resolution procedures, I've left a request for comment/help on her continuing to change the dates in the season pages and her actions with the main list in the TV project. Tenacious D Fan (talk) 00:44, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

WP:CHART says home country first, followed by all others alphabetically. It's my opinion that as this is the English language Wikipedia, that other English language charts should come before non-English language charts. -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 00:47, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Jersey City buildings image map

Thank you very much! I really should learn how to do this myself, as it would greatly add to other building lists...

  • The Towers of America complex is actually composed of four buildings, each with a green pyramidal roof. Only one is fully visible, with a second behind it and a third partially cut off by the the all-glass-building.
  • The all-glass building on the shoreline is actually not tall enough to be included in the list (it just looks taller than other buildings beacuse it is right on the water). So, it doesn't have its own article.
  • The two twin towers are the Liberty View Towers, and yes, they are joined by the 9-story base.

Thanks again for doing this! Cheers, Raime 03:00, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

No problem! Perhaps I should add myself to the contributors to the Skyscraper WikiProject, offering my services. Do you think they'd be called upon? -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 03:01, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
BTW, do you know which two of the Towers of America building there is in that image? -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 03:03, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
That would be great! They would certainly be called upon - the Jersey City list is currently the only tallest building list with an imagemap, but it has been frequently mentioned that it would nice to have these on all building lihttp://en.wikipedia.org/skins-1.5/common/images/button_sig.png

Your signature with timestampsts (FLs in particular). But, no one seems to know how to create imagemaps, myself included. And unfortunately, I don't know which of the Towers of America is in the image - you can see from this diagram that they are all identical. Cheers, Raime 03:29, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Ok, well I added myself at the project. I'll leave a comment on the talk page soon. I didn't bother naming each tower in the mapping, instead I chose to link to the article only. Note that that link you gave me says the Southampton tower was built in 2000, but the Wikipedia List says 1998. -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 03:34, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
Thank you very much - I guess I made a mistake when creating the list. I will fix that now. Cheers, Raime 03:36, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

--David Göthberg (talk) 16:19, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
Hi again. I see that you noticed that some of the templates listed in Wikipedia:Template documentation/List have become protected since that list was created. When you discover several similar things that are protected don't do a {{editprotected}} request for each of them, since that is more work for both you and the admin who have to mark it done on all those talk pages. Instead do a single request somewhere and list all the pages needed handling in one request. And you can add more requests to the same list later and activate the {{editprotected}} again, as long as you strike out the already done ones.
But in the Wikipedia:Template documentation/List case you can do it even easier, just add a comment next to the item saying "Protected page" and I or some other admin who checks that list will take care of it later.
Oh, and I took a look at some of your edits. I think you should reread the Wikipedia:Template documentation carefully since you seem to be missing parts of how to do it. (Sorry to complain. I love your hard work.)
Hmm. I'm not really sure what the right way is, then. I thought it was simply replacing {{/doc}} with {{documentation}}. I'll stick to the other two for now! -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 18:05, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Copy-editing request

Hi there. I am writing for your assistance for the article NeXT. It is currently up at FAC, and has done very well so far, but one reviewer has noted the article needs a copy-edit from an editor not already involved. I am the main contributor, and would love to see this finally become a featured article (it's failed three times already). A list of the main issues which need addressing can be found at Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates/NeXT. Please let me know if you can get around to copy-editing this within the week. Thanks! — Wackymacs (talk) 20:21, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi. I'm really sorry but I'm going to have to pass. I'm moving out of my apartment today and tomorrow, and my new one won't be ready until the 9th (it needs new paint, carpet and appliances because the previous tenants trashed it). Until then I won't have access to a computer because I'm going to be sleeping in my truck or something, I guess. Sorry. -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 20:29, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Robinepowell and Degrassi

She's back and reverting everything again, despite the blocks and page protections. I've reported her to AN/I if you'd like to add/comment. I've also reported her to 3RR for five reverts on the season 4 list and requested that all the pages be reprotected. *sigh* You'd think 4 blocks since January, and 6 since she started editing would be enough already. Wonderful. Thanks for giving me the heads up. Unfortunately I won't be around for 14 days or so to keep an eye on things :(. She's gotten on my last nerve already.
BTW, did you notice User:The Rambling Man has taken a wikibreak? I think it's from the recent vandalism to his page and an argument about the letter "s" :( -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 02:26, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
No, I hadn't noticed :( I'm extra grateful he commented on my current FLC now. Can't say as I blame him...dealing with stuff like this is draining while trying to do real edits. And ditto on Robin and nerves. :( Collectonian (talk) 02:32, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] "Cleaning up etc usage. Learn more at WP:NOWRAP"

Hi. One small request re the above: Please retain any <div>s you find framing a {{nowrap begin}}...{{nowrap end}} as they reduce the relatively wide gap between wrapped lines. Thanks for taking on some cleaning. Sardanaphalus (talk) 02:56, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Sardanaphalus: Eh? That is usually not true. When one add the {{nowrap begin}} + {{nowrap end}} then the the DIVs has no function anymore and can be removed. Usually has no effect on the margins, except in theory if the DIVs contain style="" code that tinkers with the margins. But I have never seen that in any navboxes. Are there any such cases around?
Anyway, Matthewedwards cleaned out the whole list I gave him so he's done!
--David Göthberg (talk) 04:18, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
  • I find the difference between this:
|listN = <div>
{{nowrap begin}}....{{nowrap end}}
</div>
and this:
|listN = {{nowrap begin}}....{{nowrap end}}
is that the gap between wrapped lines within the {{nowrap begin}}....{{nowrap end}} isn't too wide when the <div> is used. At least, not with Firefox. (I'm assuming something like |liststyle = line-height:1.4em; hasn't been set.) Here's a navbox test:
Sardanaphalus (talk) 12:04, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
Hm. It looks to be rendered exactly the same in Firefox and IE7 for me.. I don't understand this, and the list is done, anyway. -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 16:27, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
  • This is how it looks here, i.e. the lines in the "with <div>" are slightly closer together -- and, as I forgot to include above, there's also a little more padding above and below the list as a whole, making it more clearly distinguishable from lists above/below it. Perhaps all this might be clearer in an extended example:
Screenshot for the navbox above as it appears here is here. Yes, it's subtle but I find makes a significant difference when actual lists of links with varying names are used. Setting liststyle = line-height:1.4em; is an alternative, but the consequent lack of padding between lists can sometimes defeat the effect. I guess what I'm driving toward is lists formatted something like: <div style="padding:0.35em 0; line-height:1.4em;">{{nowrap begin}}...{{·w}}...{{nowrap end}}</div>:
Sardanaphalus (talk) 23:13, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
OK, now I see the difference. I think that adding <div style="padding:0.35em 0; line-height:1.4em;">{{nowrap begin}}...{{·w}}...{{nowrap end}}</div> to each list in every template is a clumsy way of bogging down Wikipedia's server juice though. Can't {{navbox}} etc be amended instead? -- αŁʰƏЩ @ 00:04, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Errors in one of your edits

First: Nice work on cleaning up people’s wrong usage of {{nowrap begin}} etc. Many people don’t know how to use this family of templates, which are quite a bit more complex than the simple {{·}}…

Second: Your edit on Template:Foreign Secretary introduced a </ br> tag – I guess you meant to write <br />? Also, a formatting error broke a link in the bottom line of the template and you obviously didn’t check the preview before saving. I don’t blame you – I have done the same thing when doing bulk editing :-) Also, I haven’t checked your edit log to see if it was a one-time mistake or if you have consistently changed <br> → </ br>, but I hope you will.

Thanks for rewieing Seinfeld (season 1) at FLC, I just have one question, Is it required to use this template? I would like to know, please. I'll change it if you insist. Also one more are we supposed to state if a show is filmed in front of studio audience? --Gman124 talk 04:52, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

All other episodic FLs use the template. Given that the other FLC, Seinfeld (season 3) does (I haven't looked at any others), it should be. The seasons' lists can then be transcluded onto List of Seinfeld episodes, similar to how The Simpsons, Lost, and Degrassi: The Next Generation episodes have.
I would add it if it was, because it's part of the production information. -- Matthewedwards (talk · contribs · count · email) 05:08, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey Matthew, welcome back, hope your move wasn't as bad as they always say - most stressful thing in life apparently! As for your list concept, well the idea of a 217 list FT is outrageous, obviously! Crazy talk. But, in terms of the "usefulness" of such lists, I can't see why not. You'll need to work on the name of the lists, avoid the sortability because you've got colspan's in there which wreck the whole thing, but otherwise I wouldn't object at all. Because "Dumont" is a popular spelling for the company, though technically incorrect (per Weinstein, 2004 and Ingram, 2002), I try to check semi-regularly. It's cool to see new pages, like your sandbox page, pop up on these search results. I'm glad to know the network isn't completely forgotten. :) Best wishes and happy editing, Firsfron of Ronchester 03:35, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Python script

It's very crude and hard-coded, so you would need to have some knowledge of python to modify it. It reads a Wiki source page saved to a text file as oldtable.txt, and just reads and rewrites each line other than a table line. A table line is broken into its components, which then can be put back together in a different order. It doesn't modify table headers, although that wouldn't be difficult to add. It also doesn't know about tables which have a field per line.

The first line of the script is necessary to handle non-ascii characters eg macrons in Maori words and mdashes. This is probably Unix/Linux specific.

  1. -*- coding: latin-1 -*-

"""cols.py

A python program to reorder the columns of "List of schools in New Zealand" articles """

__author__ = "gadfium" __version__ = "$Revision: 1.0 $" __date__ = "$Date: 2008/05/25 $" __copyright__ = "None" __license__ = "public domain"

if __name__ == "__main__":

   infile = open("oldtable.txt", "rt")
   wiki = infile.read()
   infile.close()
   lines = wiki.splitlines()
   outfile = open("newtable.txt", "wt")
   for line in lines:
       if line.find("| ")==0:
           elements = line.split("||")
           line = elements[0] + "||"
           line = line + ("||").join(elements[3:])
           line = line + " || " + elements[1] + " || " + elements[2]
       outfile.write(line)
       outfile.write("\n")
   outfile.close()

Hope it's useful for you.-gadfium 02:51, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

If you have some programming experience but don't know Python, and you're still interested, I'll comment it for you. If you have a specific task, tell me and I'll suggest how it should be modified.-gadfium 02:57, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re:legend3

Yes, {{legend3}} looks a lot better than the {{colorbox}} and should be merged. I'd just discuss it first at the colorbox' talkpage.--Crzycheetah 06:50, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

So, what you mean is that we add {{#if:{{{2|}}}|{{#if:{{{3|}}}|[[{{{3}}}|{{{2}}}]]|{{{2}}}}}|}} to {{colorbox}} in place of {{{2| }}} that I just added? I just thought that that word legend is more appropriate for this box than just a "colorbox". --Crzycheetah 07:12, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
OK, do it! It looks very useful.--Crzycheetah 07:26, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Done! Does it work correctly? --Crzycheetah 07:39, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] I have returned

Thanks for keeping an eye on things while I was gone and promoting some FLCs. With Rambling Man gone for another week or so, I may call on you again to close one of my FLCs. As well, have your concerns about List of scientific publications by Albert Einstein been addressed? -- Scorpion0422 20:48, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Request for Peer Review help

Thank you for you work as a peer review volunteer. Since March, there has been a concerted effort to make sure all peer review requests get some response. Requests that have gone three days or longer without a substantial response are listed at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog. I have three requests to help this continue.

1) If you are asked to do a peer review, please ask the person who made the request to also do a review, preferably of a request that has not yet had feedback. This is fairly simple, but helps. For example when I review requests on the backlog list, I close with Hope this helps. If my comments are useful, please consider peer reviewing an article, especially one at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog (which is how I found this article). Yours, ...

2) While there are several people who help with the backlog, lately I have been doing up to 3 or 4 peer reviews a day and can not keep this up much longer. We need help. Since there are now well over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, if each volunteer reviewed just one PR request without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog. To help spread out the load, I suggest those willing pick a day of the month and do a review that day (for example, my first edit was on the 8th, so I could pick the 8th). Please pick a peer review request with no responses yet, if possible off the backlog list. If you want, leave a note on my talk page as to which day you picked and I will remind you each month.

3) I have made some proposals to add some limits to peer review requests at Wikipedia_talk:Peer_review#Proposed_limits. The idea is to prevent any one user from overly burdening the process. These seem fairly reasonable (one PR request per editor per day, only four total PR requests per editor at a time, PR requests with cleanup banners can be delisted (like GAN quick fail), and wait two weeks to relist a PR request after it is archived), but have gotten no feedback in one week. If you have any thoughts on these, please weigh in.

Thanks again for your help and in advance for any assistance with the backlog. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:00, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] FLC

Thanks for the barnstar, Matthew; you're too kind! Still need to raise the benchmark for prose at FLC, though, I think. TONY (talk) 06:30, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

You're probably right. I've noticed you've been commenting on more FLCs, so with your help hopefully it will begin to happen. Matthewedwards (talk · contribs · count · email) 06:34, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] List of highways in Warren County NY FLC

Well, you commented that the sortable table isn't working. Another user and I have tried fixing this issue, but its the convert templates that are messing it up. So they have been removed for now. Could you take a look at it possibly?Mitch32contribs 12:46, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
