[edit] New York City F.C. stadium
On 4 February 2004, the club's board announced that an agreement had been reached which would see York City remain at Bootham Crescent until 2015.[1] By this time, they must be ready to move to a new ground. It is hoped that the new stadium will not just provide a home for York City, but also be used as a concert venue. The York Central site was the favoured location for the new stadium, but it was announced in February 2006 that plans for a move there could be scuppered and the Nestlé site could become the home of the new stadium. Other possible sites had been Huntington Stadium and land close to Naburn,[2] but now the ground will be built on either the British Sugar, York Central or Nestlé North sites.[3] York City's stadium manager Ian McAndrew and councillor Bill Woolley gave positive talks on finding a new home for the club in February 2007.[4] York City's board revealed on February 28, 2007 that the club are hoping the move to a new ground can be completed within five years.[5] York revealed they are on the verge of a deal with landowners and council chiefs for a new stadium in April 2007.[3]
The new stadium will be similar to Dartfords Princes Park, but will hold a larger capacity. Steve Galloway, City of York Council leader, said his aspiration was for a 10,000-seater stadium to be built, which would be home to both York City and York City Knights, although, speaking at the launch of his party's election manifesto on 3 April 2007, he said it may start out smaller, at 6,000 or 7,000.[3] United Kingdom Sports Minister Richard Caborn met with York directors Jason McGill, Rob McGill and Sophie McGill, along with City of York Council Labour group leader Councillor Dave Merrett. Caborn said: "I am very impressed by what I have heard. Their proposal on how to incorporate community-based facilities in new stadium arrangements is excellent. Their plan fits in very well with the Government's agenda to widen access and involvement in sports and physical activity, addressing both social inclusion and health issues."[6]
