[edit] Biography
[edit] Birth and Education
Matt Roberts was born in Leeds on August 17th 1986 into a fairly typical English family. His mother, Gillian Roberts, is a dentist, and his father, David Roberts, is a civil engineer. Matt spent his childhood in a lovely market town in the north east of England named Darlington where he attended Reid Street Primary School. It was during his time at Reid Street Primary School that he took up the trumpet and the piano.
Matt went on to attend Hummersknott Comprehensive School and Language College where he studied GCSE's in Electronics, Music, Maths, English, Science, Business Studies (which bored the hell out of him) and a bunch of other subjects. It was during this time that Matt took up the drums and guitar and started his first creative band alongside guitarist Sam Cull and bassist Adam Austin, this would later be known as Fude. By the time Matt left Comprehensive school (2002) he was performing regularly with Fude (as a drummer) and with various youth brass bands and big bands (as a brass player).
In 2002, Matt enroled at the Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College to study A/AS levels in Maths, Music, Computing, Media Studies, General Studies and Science for Public Understanding. It was around this time that Matt co-formed, now legendary (well, at least around Darlington), Skapunk/Hiphop group The Hot Quiche Conspiracy with a bunch of fine gentlemen that would soon become his closest friends.
In 2004, Matt auditioned for the BA Jazz Studies course at Leeds College of Music and was granted a conditional offer. Matt began his studies at LCM in 2005 and is currently is his final year (wish him luck!)
[edit] The Hot Quiche Conspiracy
[edit] Beginnings
The Hot Quiche Conspiracy were formed in 2003 by Matt, drummer David Schott, trombonist Gareth Hodgson, guitarist Micheal "Clam" Gamble and bassist Si Rose. After spending several months writing, rehersing and going through various line up changes, the band broke out onto the live scene with a debute performance at the infamous Tap'n'Spile in Darlington. The band soon began to gig regularly around the north-east of England, winning several "Battle of the Bands" competitions on the way. As the band's sound evolved several members joined, left or were kicked out. To leave them with the current line up of...
Ruddy - Vocals
Matt - Trumpet
Kris - Trumpet
Gazz - Trombone
Dave - Trombone
Clam - Guitar
Jonny Crawford - Bass
Schotty - Drums
[edit] Releases
The band have so far released three EP's.
Date of Release | Title | UK Albums Chart |
---|---|---|
2003 | This One's For You, Al | #194 |
2005 | Live In Tokyo | #173 |
2006 | Young, Keen and With Eyes On The Prize | #131 |
The first track of every CD is always an Intrumental lasting around a minute. Each CD also contains a Rap track, with the exception of "This One's For You, Al" which includes a hidden track of Dialogue set to a Trip-hop beat.
Their third CD, "Young, Keen and With Eyes On The Prize", contains the first act of a two-part Skapunk opera. Rumoured to be the first of its kind, "Young, Keen and With Eyes On The Prize" follows the story of four sixth-formers Jonny, Joanne, Tom and Darren. The main character, Jonny, finds himself besotted with his childhood sweetheart Joanne. Unforchunately Joanne is in a relationship with Darren, who is a Charver and also appears to be an arse-hole! Of course it all ends in tears (these things usually do) when Jonny declares his feelings for Joanne at a house party hosted by Tom only to find out that she is about to move away with Darren. The Act ends with Jonny broken by his humiliation and rejection. No date has been set for the release of the second act.
[edit] Live Performances
Over the years the band have performed alongside many great bands; such as Goldie Lookin' Chain, Lightyear, Adequate 7, Captain Everything!, Lockdown Project, Five Knuckle and many more.
The group have become notorious for delivering elaborate stage performances, particularly at their home venue The Forum in Darlington. A typical Hot Quiche performance will often include costumes, free jelly, nudity, prizes, heroic sing-alongs and elaborate stage entrances. Their stage entrances are usually themed with previous themes including the Nativity of Jesus and the 90's hit game show Gladiators.
