Matthew Lackey Vining is a versatile athlete that has been concentrating on the decathlon in track and field at [Arkansas State University]. Matt is the two time indoor Sun Belt Conference champion in the Heptathlon. He hold the Sun Belt Conference record in the Heptathlon with 4990pts. He is also the two time Outdoor Sun Belt Conference Champion in the [Decathlon]. He is a 23 time All Sun Belt Performer and apart of two Conference Championships in 2005 and 2007.

Matthew Lackey Vining was born in Arkadelphia, Arkansas on May 12, 1984. Matt is the son of Bill Jr. and Marsha Vining. Matt has two siblings, Kristen, 2 years older, and Mark 5 years younger. He grew up in Nashville, Tennessee and attended Lighthouse Christian School through his freshman year. The following year he and his family moved back to Arkansas to Hot Springs and Lake Hamilton High School. While in high school Matt participated in football, basketball, baseball, cross country, and track and field. His senior season Matt was an All State performer in both basketball and track and field in the high jump and decathlon. He also went on to win the State Decathlon title edging out [Wallace Spearmon]. Matt thhen signed his letter of intent to run track for ASU with Jay Flannigan and Lon Badeaux.
