Population statistics (can be found from the Bureau of Statistics Office). Tip: The ABS website is a very hard to navigate - so to find the right document, search google for POA2234 (replace "2234" with the right postcode for your suburb). Then you can either download the data for AUS$10, or the ABS site will let you download it for free if the computer you are using is in a University or a library.
-
- using this Australian Bureau of Statistics page you can navigate to free statistical local area information. For example, snapshot of Red Hill. You can compare your suburb with Canberra figures.

- Wikipedia_talk:Fame_and_importance#No: Jimbo Wales - 'fame' and 'importance' are not the right words to use, they are merely rough approximations to what we're really interested in, which is verifiability and NPOV. I understand and appreciate where people are coming from on the 'Yes' vote, but feel that they will only get the unanimity necessary in a wiki environment if they rephrase the issue in those terms. Consider an obscure scientific concept, 'Qubit Field Theory' -- 24 hits on google. I'd say that not more than a few thousand people in the world have heard of it, and not more than a few dozen understand it. (I certainly don't.) It is not famous and it is arguably not important, but I think that no one would serious question that it is valid material for an encyclopedia. What is it that makes this encyclopedic? It is that it is information which is verifiable and which can be easily presented in an NPOV fashion. (Though perhaps only as a stub, of course, since it's very complicated and not many people would know how to express it clearly in layperson's terms.)

[edit] Polydore Vergil
The Anglica Historia of Polydore Vergil A.D. 1485-1537 Polydore Vergil (1470-1555) was an Italian priest who arrived in Britain in the year 1502 and was commissioned by King Henry VII to write a history of Britain. He began his History in the year 1506....
This site discussing the "Historia Regum Britannie" (History of the Kings of Britain), completed in 1136, by Geoffrey of Monmouth talks about The "Anglica Historia": "... during the time of Henry VIII, when a Roman Catholic priest called Polydore Vergil (c.1470-1555) published his "Anglica Historia", denouncing the entire history of the Britons with the following words:
-
-
- "Trulie ther is nothinge more obscure, more uncertaine, or unknowne then the affaires of the Brittons from the beginninge.
-
"The "Anglica Historia" consisted of 25 books altogether and was published in a number of successive editions. The first edition was published in 1534, the second in 1546, the third in 1555, and a number of further editions up to 1651. Details of Polydore Vergil, and his attack on the British history, are given by McKisack (Medieval History in the Tudor Age, May McKisack, Oxford University Press, 1971, p.98-101.).
"There was an angry reaction from the Welsh..."

[edit] Crowd disasters
Crowd disasters have resulted in the deaths of many people.
In 1989 (April 15) 96 people were crushed to death at Hillsborough, Sheffield, England. The police opened gates to alleviate crowding outside the Stadium and a resulting rush of people onto the already filled terrace sections trapped fans against riot control fences ringing the field.

[edit] Deletion of Causes célèbres - debate too late
This is a wonderful example of how a tiny minority can impose their ignorance on the Wikipedia community thanks to the dysfunctional VFD process. It's a safe bet that the dozens of people who contributed to this category are blissfully unaware that their work is about to be nuked - because somebody doesn't like (or understand) an English expression of French origin! I don't see any of the nukers volunteering to recatagorize the articles. Of course not - that would take effort. Slashing and burning is easy and fun. Mirror Vax 28 June 2005 21:45 (UTC)
- I do not follow all the myriad deletion pages (in fact am not necessarily aware of them all) and I am always a little stunned to suddenly find that a debate has been going on where, as suggested by Mirror Vax above, many of the editors who used the categorisation or relied on it would have been unaware of the debate. People tend to watch article pages so can catch up with changes to articles they have contributed to, including the addition of a VfD. (Other not closely followed deletion debates also include template for deletion.) This debate seems to have had few contributers and no clear concensus. There is a nomination plus 2 delete votes clearly marked as such, two keep votes and a tentative keep. The debate is summarised on Wikipedia:Categories for deletion as "Was on VFU for ten days but never reached consensus to undelete." Where was the consensus to delete in the first place? There are 39 articles categorised, it is not a trivial category as some of those nominated for deletion. I do not believe it is appropriate to persist with deletion and depopulation of the category.--AYArktos 28 June 2005 23:23 (UTC)
-
- Dans ce pays-ci, il est bon de tuer de temps en temps un amiral pour encourager les autres. RIP my lovely category although I hope to see it resurrected in some form. AYArktos, you made the same points I made in the CfD debate (if 'debate' is not stretching it), and at length in the VfU debate, but sadly the majority of the other edits were from those uninterested in listening. In fact there were 105 articles in the category at its peak. David | Talk 28 June 2005 23:26 (UTC)
I have found a more recent category for deletion debate Log for 11 June 2005[3] that is not referenced on this talk page nor clearly pointed to on the current Wikipedia:Categories for deletion page. The Vote for Undeletion can be seen at [4] subsequent revision removed the debate as "unlist causes celebres ...[no] majority for undeletion". I appreciate that there were more people participating in the debate than the debate archived above. However, perhaps going by concensus within debates should not be the only judgement for categories and templates. The number of articles using those categories and templates and the number of editors allowing those categories and templates to stat in place on those pages should form part of the picture. The article on Schapelle Corby is a heavily edited and heavily watched page. The catgorisation of it as a Causes célèbres was passed by many editors - why doesn't that form part of the picture in considering deletion or undeletion?--AYArktos 28 June 2005 23:44 (UTC)
