Matthew Wright (born July 8, 1965 in Croydon, Surrey) is a British journalist and television presenter.

He attended the John Fisher School in Purley, London and was in the same class as his friend, the artist and sculptor Diarmuid Bryon O'Connor, DJ Gilles Peterson.

A child actor, appearing in the Children's Film Foundation production Big Wheels And Sailor in 1979, he went on to become a showbiz journalist with The Sun before getting his own column with The Daily Mirror in the 90s. Wright auditioned for the part of Simon Raymond in the popular BBC soap Eastenders but was rejected for the role on the grounds that he was 'too light on his feet.' Wright has occasionally made reference to the rejection on The Wright Stuff, but maintains he would like to appear on the programme if given the chance. In 1998 Wright reviewed the play The Dead Monkey which David Soul starred in calling it "without doubt the worst West End show", despite the fact that he had never seen it. In 2001 David Soul won £20,000 in a libel case against him. Matthew went on to help Martine McCutcheon write her best-selling autobiography Who Does She Think She Is?.[1]

After leaving The Daily Mirror in 2000 to launch mykindaplace.com[2], he went on to host his own daytime talk show The Wright Stuff for Channel Five. It was on this show that Wright inadvertently 'outed' John Leslie as the celebrity that had allegedly raped Ulrika Jonsson. Police investigated Leslie but never charged him with respect to the Jonsson case. Wright and Leslie later made fun of the situation in the video for Bo' Selecta's 2003 Christmas single.

Matthew presents Radio 2's arts and culture show The Weekender as well as the BBC1 current affairs series Inside Out London. A fanatical fly-fisherman and British motorcyle fan, Matthew has also maintained contacts with a variety of characters from the Free Festival scene of the 70s and 80s. He regularly appears on stage with space rockers Hawkwind. He released a single with the band, Spirit of the Age, in 2006 and is credited on the Hawkwind album Take Me To Your Leader released the same year.
