Matthew Wood (Yorkshire-born cricketer)

Matthew Wood is an English professional cricketer with Glamorgan CCC. He is a right handed batsman and very occasional off break bowler who made his debut in First-class cricket in 1997. He was born on 6 April 1977 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire .
Up to the end of the 2007 season he had played in 129 first class matches, scoring 6820 runs with a highest score of 207 at an average of 33.43. He has compiled 16 first class centuries, taken 113 catches and snared 2 wickets at 21.5.
He played second team cricket for 3 years before notching a century in his second first class match, against Derbyshire in 1998, and completing the year with 3 more first class tons. Two years of failure followed but, converted to an opening batsman, he starred in Yorkshire's Championship winning side in 2000, scoring 4 more centuries at the top of the order.
He was rewarded with two tours of Australia with the England Academy but another slump in 2002 saw him lose his first team place. He recovered in 2003, helping himself to 1400 runs, 5 centuries and the club and players player awards at Headingley, but was left out of England's plans.
He deputised as captain on several occasions in 2003 and 2004 but his hopes of promotion to Yorkshire's oft troubled helm were skittled by poor seasons in 2004 and 2005 and he was dropped back to the seconds in 2006 after yet another run of low scores. He began 2007 as captain of Yorkshire Second XI but was released in mid-season. Matthew joined Glamorgan in October 2007.
