Matthew Wells OAM (born May 2, 1978 in Hobart, Tasmania) is a field hockey defender from Australia, who was a member of the team that won the golden medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens by beating title holders The Netherlands in the final. Four years earlier, when Sydney hosted the Summer Games, he finished in third spot with The Kookaburras, as the Men's National Team is called.

Wells is nicknamed Wellsy by his team mates. After being selected to make his debut for the Australian team in a friendly against The Netherlands in January 1998, he earned his 100th international cap against Pakistan during the 2002 Champions Trophy in Cologne, Germany. Wells is the captain of the MIA Tassie Tigers in the Australian Hockey League (AHL). He had to miss the 2006 Men's Hockey World Cup due to injury.
