Matthew Watkins (born 2 September 1978 in Newport, Wales) is a Welsh rugby union footballer who plays at centre for Llanelli Scarlets and Wales. He is commonly known by the name Matthew J. Watkins, to avoid confusion with another rugby union player by the same name.

On 12 May 2008, it was announced that Watkins would be moving to Gloucester at the end of the 2007–08 season, mid-way through his three-year contract at the Scarlets. His contract at Gloucester is reported to be for two years.[1]
