Matthew Saunoa is a 21 year old New Zealand singer from Levin and is the third winner of NZ Idol. He was not expected by betting agency Centrebet to win, rather they expected his competitor Indira Moala to win. His profession prior to entering Idol is building garages in Levin. Just like fellow competitor Indira Moala, week after week he received positive comments from the judges making him a very consistent performer.
He and Indira went face to face on Sunday 22nd of October, 2006 singing a song chosen by the judges and the band. He also sang, "You Give Me Something" by James Morrison along with runner-up, Indira. The next day they went into a 'Head 2 Head' competition singing 5 songs each, some of them already previously sung. On Indira's last performance, Stables, one of the judges, mentioned that he thought Matt did better on all performances for that night. On October the 28th, 2006, he could not bungee jump off the Auckland Sky Tower because of his weight.
He went on to win NZ Idol on October the 29th, 2006. His winner's single, Hold Out, went to number one on the New Zealand Chart starting 6th November 2006. However his single failed to achieve the same success as the two previous winners and Matt will not be releasing an album under the NZ Idol record contract.'Hold Out' was chosen as the theme song for the ads of tv one's summer series. This is probably why his debut single has bounced back into the top 40.After it bowed out of the chart just only 6 weeks in, it managed to rebound back to #24.It still remains in the chart and as of 19th February, it has a peak of #29 with 12 weeks in the chart. In 2007 it sank back to #32 [1].Even though it has not been certified yet, it has spent more weeks in the chart than season 2 winner Rosita Vai who's single 'All I Ask' only managed to spend 9 weeks in the chart, although it went platinum.
