Matthew Rosamund

Matthew Rosamund VC (July 12, 1823 - July 14, 1866) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Rosamund was 33 years old, and a Sergeant-Major in the 37th, Bengal Native Infantry, Indian Army during the Indian Mutiny.
On 4 June 1857 at Benares, India, Sergeant-Major Rosamund volunteered to accompany his commanding officer to the right of the lines in order to set fire to them and drive out the sepoys. He also volunteered to go with Sergeant-Major Peter Gill and Private John Kirk to rescue a paymaster and his family from their bungalow and to take them to the safety of the barracks.
Rosamund later achieved the rank of Lieutenant.
