Matthew Levin is an American chef based in Philadelphia. He is the executive chef at Lacroix in the famed Rittenhouse Hotel.[1] Executive Chef Matthew Levin knew from an early age that cooking was his passion. Chef Levin attended Syracuse University on a lacrosse scholarship. At Syracuse University he studied business. He then went on to the prestigious Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park, NY to follow his love of the culinary arts.
As a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Levin began his culinary career training under chefs including George Perrier at Le Bec-Fin & Brasserie Perrier and Craig Shelton at the Ryland Inn. Chef Levin eventually went on to distinguished restaurants such as Aureole in New York City, Charlie Trotters in Chicago and The Pluckemin Inn in Bedminster, N.J.[2]
Chef Levin drew national attention as executive chef at the Moonlight Restaurant in New Hope, PA. Bon Appetit reported, “Levin’s culinary creations now share the spotlight with art, thanks to “Moonlight.”[3] Prominent Philadelphia Inquirer food critic Craig LaBan awarded Moonlight three bells.[4]
Levin returned to his hometown of Phildelphia in 2006 to join the kitchen at Lacroix. Soon after his arrival, Philadelphia Inquirer food critic Craig LaBan awarded the cuisine a rare four bells stating, “Chef Levin has elevated this luxury destination to an elite four-bell status,” hailing Levin’s creations as “Philly’s most sophisticated contemporary cooking.” [5]
Lifestyle Magazine named Chef Levin among the region’s best chefs and Philadelphia Style magazine named Chef Levin one of Philadelphia’s “Hot Chefs in 2007.”[6] In 2008, Philadelphia Magazine rated Lacroix #2 out of the top 50 restaurants in Philadelphia. [7]
Chef Levin oversees multiple outlets at The Rittenhouse including banquet, pastry and room service kitchens.
Chef Levin recently created his own line of spices available at Lacroix at the Rittenhouse. The flavors include: Ras el Hanout, Smoked Honey Powder, Salty Apricot, Smokey Aromas, Chocolate Chimichurri and Coconut Samsara. Chef Levin advises to try different combinations and experiment with the world of spices.
