Matthew "Matt" Leuenberger is an Australian rules football player drafted by the Brisbane Lions in the 2006 AFL Draft at pick no. 4.

[edit] Early career

Leuenberger represented Western Australia in the under-18 Rising Star program and was a key prospect in the ruck. He stands at 202cm and weighs 92kg and is considered a ready-built utility, likened to Collingwood's last no 1 pick Josh Fraser and West Coast's Dean Cox. His ruckwork, mobility and agility are some of his key assets. He had an astonishing 61 hitouts in one game in the U18 championships; such performances earned him selection in the U18 All-Australian team.

Following a highly promising debut season in 2007, the Brisbane Lions extended his existing contract by an additional 2 years, which will see Leuenberger continue his career with Brisbane until at least the end of 2010.

After a slow start to the 2008 season, Leuenberger is finding his feet, and was named in the Fantasy Team of the Week on AFL Teams, aired on Fox Sports.

[edit] Positions

Matthew Leuenberger plays predominantly as a ruckman, but has the athleticism to play as a forward in a pinch.
