[edit] Cold blooded

Ever since the King family arrived in March 2004, Matthew has remained the most calculating and scheming of his dysfunctional clan. The middle son of business supremo Tom King, Matthew has always had a much darker side than brothers Jimmy, Max and even Carl.

Matthew's heartless nature was shown when Carl was involved in the accidental death of postman Paul Marsden. Matthew dealt with the tragic incident with bone-chilling coldness.

Having moved the body and covered up Carl’s involvement, Matthew then conned Paul’s widow Siobhan into selling her his cottage at a knockdown price before chasing her out of the village. The duplicitous way he treated Siobhan is characteristic of Matthew.

Although his elder brother Jimmy should be in line to inherit their father’s business, Matthew has worked tirelessly to ensure Tom leaves it to him instead, a task which given Jimmy's impressive skill for leaving a trail of clownish calamity in his path, did not prove particularly difficult. The rivalry between the two brothers has turned nasty on more than one occasion - and Matthew’s never happier than when bumbling Jimmy is making yet another mistake.

[edit] Matthew's 'relationships'

And it’s not just people who get in th way of his business interests who’ve suffered at mean Matthew’s hands.

At the funeral of one of Tom’s closest friends, Matthew bedded the deceased’s daughter before using squeeze Sian to make his next conquest Louise Appleton jealous. What Matthew wants, he gets, and it took him very little time to convince Louise she should end her relationship with loyal boyfriend Terry and spark up a passionate affair with him.

However, as soon as Louise ditched Terry for him, Matthew began mistreating Louise. He told her that their fling was over after having allowed Louise to lose everything. This is a typical example of the psychological abuse which Matthew is capable of.

[edit] Scheming Matthew

After Matthew discovered that Sadie caused the show home collapse (which tragically claimed the lives of several Emmerdale residents and landed Jimmy in hospital), he was furious. Matthew was even more horrified to discover that in the wreckage following the disaster, Sadie had bashed ex-husband Jimmy over the head with a brick. As a result, Matthew told Sadie that it was over and was thus welcomed back into his family.

Matthew took a keen interest in Perdita Hyde-Sinclair, having slept with her in his office during the Home Farm ball. He began to rely on Perdy, who recently provided him with information about Matthew's hated stepmother, Rosemary King.

When Tom was brutally murdered on Christmas Day 2006, Matthew suspected Rosemary of committing the crime. However, there was evidence against all three King brothers suggesting that they had killed Tom together. They were therefore charged with murder.

However, on the day of their trial, which collapsed due to lack of evidence, Matthew was shocked to discover that Carl was behind Tom's demise and that Jimmy knew that Carl was responsible. Matthew was devastated, making it clear once more that underneath his cruel exterior, like his brothers he was saddened by the lack of trust and closeness in their damaged family.

[edit] Relationship with Perdita Hyde-Sinclair

Outside of the troubles of his own family, Matthew became involved in the troubles of his former lover, Perdita Hyde-Sinclair after he found out his stepmother was drugging her and had her sectioned. His support of Perdy led the two growing closer. So close that actor, Matt Healy who plays Matthew, described the couple as "soulmates clinging to each other." As the friendship grew, Matthew fell in love with her and the two began a relationship despite Perdy being married to Grayson Sinclair, Matthew's worst enemy. Matthew eventually told Perdy he loved her, but Perdy, after discovering her surrogate, Katie Sugden was expecting a baby, found she was caught between her feelings for her lover and the fact that she and her husband were finally expecting a baby. Matthew, totally unexpected, stunned Perdy by declaring he would wait for her and raise the baby as his own, so long as it meant being with her.[1] Perdy was thrilled and the two carried on their secret affair but Grayson found out and out of revenge, framed Matthew for his mother's 'murder'. Perdy found out, by discovering some implicating evidence in Graysons briefcase, that Rosemary was in fact alive and well, staying in Miami, revealed in a letter. Perdy then revealed to Grayson that she knew, and blackmailed him into turning himself in- she wouldn't reveal certain evidence, that could get him in more trouble, if he went to the police. She then left him, Christmas day 2007, and Matthew invited her to move in with him. However Matthew discovered Perdy's involvement in Grayson's attempt to secure Matthews downfall and arrest for Rosemarys death. Matthew through Perdy out of Home Farm and ended their relationship claiming he only slept with her because he knew it would upset Grayson. However, there has been strong hints that he is more hurt over the relationship ending, than he is letting on.

On May 28th, Jimmy reminded Matthew about his terrible treatment of Perdy and Matthew showed some genuine signs of remorse, even if he can't bring himself to admit it.
