Matthew Goldstein

Dr. Matthew Goldstein is the current chancellor of the City University of New York (CUNY). He was appointed Chancellor effective September 1, 1999. Dr. Goldstein is the first City University graduate to head the University, having received his undergraduate degree from City College. Previously, he had been president of Baruch College (1991-1998) and Adelphi University. He is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences and in 2006 he became a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1999, Dr. Goldstein helped to end the University's open admissions policy due to fiscal cutbacks.
Dr. Goldstein received his bachelor's degree in statistics and mathematics from City College and a doctorate in mathematical statistics from the University of Connecticut. He has been a professor of mathematics and statistics at Baruch College, Cooper Union, and at the University of Connecticut. He has published numerous books and articles. Goldstein is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and the Golden Key Honor Society.

After becoming Chancellor, Dr. Goldstein established The Honors College University Scholars Program, which graduated its first class in 2005. The Honors College is targeted at academically gifted students. The standards for admission are very high, and Students in The Honors College are called University Scholars. The standards of The Honors College have continued to rise since its inception.[citation needed] The Honors College has improved the image of CUNY as a whole, which prior to the institution of its open admission policy in the 1970s graduated the greatest number of Nobel laureates of any public university in the world.
