Matthew Doherty (born 29 April 1987, in Derry) is a Northern Irish professional footballer, currently playing for Heart of Midlothian. While primarily considered a winger, he is versatile enough to play as a wingback or central striker when required.
He was signed from Carlisle United in 2004 but has yet to make a first team appearance. Alongside Hearts team-mate David Armstrong, he is a member of the present Northern Irish Under-19 team.
Doherty joined Cowdenbeath in January 2003 on a 6-month loan deal, in order to gain first team experience,[1] and returned to Central Park for a second loan spell in August of that year.
However after scouts appeared at a recent N. Ireland under 21 game, speculation is rife that Matthew Doherty may be snapped up by Athletico Madrid and Argentian giants, River Plate.
