Matthew Croucher

Matthew Croucher is a Royal Marine Commando who has been recommended to receive the Victoria Cross, the highest commendation for valour in the British Armed Forces. He was recommended for the award for throwing himself on a grenade to save his comrades during a reconnaissance mission near Sangin in Helmand Province in Afghanistan on February 11th 2008. Should he be awarded the medal he will be the first Royal Marine to receive the award since 1945 and only the second living British recipient in the twenty-first century [1][2][3][4].

Lance-Corporal Croucher was born in Solihull in the West Midlands and attended Lyndon Humanities College. He has been a Royal Marine since leaving school and has served three tours in Iraq and one tour in Afghanistan. He is a member of 40 Commando who are based at Taunton in Somerset.
