Matthew Buchanan (born Matthew Hanen-Rappaport[1]) is a fictional character on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live. Best known in the part is Eddie Alderson, who assumed the role in 2001. Alderson's real-life sister Kristen has portrayed Matthew's friend Starr Manning on the series since 1998.

In 1998, Nora Buchanan's husband Bo was devastated when his son Drew, a police officer, was killed in the line of duty. Nora hoped to conceive a child to give Bo a reason to live; out of desperation she turned to former flame Sam Rappaport. The pregnancy pulled Bo back onto his feet, but he and Nora later divorced when it was revealed that Nora's child had been fathered by Sam. Their son Matthew was born in 1999.
Sam died in 2003, and it was revealed that Matthew was, in fact, Bo Buchanan's son. Still mourning Sam, the only father he'd ever known, Matthew slowly built a relationship with Bo. In May 2005 Matthew suffered the death of his former "sister," Sam's daughter Jennifer Rappaport, with whom Matthew had become close. To make matters worse, it was eventually revealed that Jennifer had been murdered by Matthew's stepfather (Nora's husband) Daniel Colson in his effort to cover up a murder he had committed (and his homosexuality). Matthew's name was changed to Matthew Buchanan on 17 June 2005 for Father's Day.[1]
Matthew has shared a long friendship with Starr Manning, who often manages to get him tangled up in her schemes.
