Mattanur (മട്ടന്നൂര്‍) is a city and a municipality in Kannur district in the Indian state of Kerala. Mattanur is around 25 km east of Kannur and Thalassery.

Mattannur lies between Kannur, Thalassery and Iritty. The inter-state buses ply between Bangalore and Kannur passes through Mattanur. It is an important hub connecting Kodagu and Kannur. Though small, it has many attractions. The town has developed around the Mattanur Mahadeva Temple.

The proposed Kannur Airport is just about 5 km from Mattanur, which makes it the closest town to the Airport.

Mattanur is going to be a new attraction in Kerala Tourism map as the new proposed Kannur international Airport is comping up only a finger point away from Mattanur Muncipal Town. As the place is very near by the very popular tourist places like St Angelos Fort Kannur, Payyambalam Beach, Muzhappilangad Drive in beach, Beauty of Koorg, Etc. the new airport will be very much helpful for placing Mattanur at central point at North Kerala's Tourism map.

In and around Mattanur is having nature blessed beautiful places. Pazhassi Dam is an attraction nearby. It's having a well arranged garden and boating. The dam inagurated by late Prime Minister of India Morarji Desai provides drinking water to Kannur Munciplity.

As Malabar area in Kerala is famous for anciant folk dance called "Theyyam", Mattannr also very much blessed with different verieties of "Kavu" where the theyyam will be processed in the month of January to April.

Mattanur Sree Maha Deva temple is one more attraction.

One of the eminent personalities from Mattanur was Shri. Pulleri-illathu Madhusoodanan Thangal from the pre-independent era. During the British rule he represented the area in Madras Legislative Council (MLC).

The most institute to be mentioed in the area of education at Mattanur is Pazhassi Raja NSS College. The college was established on 1964 founded by social reformer and great educationalist Padmabhooshan Sri. Mannathu Padmanabhan. The college comes under Kannur University and offers courses in various disciplines like English, Malayalam, Mathemetics, Physics, Chemistry Etc.

In and around Mattanur is having many government and private schools and private colleges. Mattanur Govt. Politechnic is one of the famous technical institution which offer technical training.

Mattanur is famous "Chenda Vadyam", which is a famous instrumental program using "Chenda" - which is the anciant musical instrument used to wakeup the sleeping god in temples. Mattanur Panchavadya Sangham is very famous in various programs using "Chenda" and now the name of the place known to out side people in Kerala on behalf of Sri. Mattannur Shankaran Kutty, the famous Thayambaka artist.

As of 2001 India census,[1] Mattannur had a population of 44,317. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Mattannur has an average literacy rate of 82%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 85%, and female literacy is 79%. In Mattannur, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
