Matt Windman

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matt Windman is theater critic of amNewYork, a free daily New York City newspaper.[1] He first joined the paper in 2004 as a writer and became theater critic in July 2005. Presently 24 years old, he is the youngest first-string theater critic now in New York City - and possibly ever. He has also written for Time Out New York, Show Business Weekly[2], Backstage, Theatermania[3], and Washington Square News.

Windman's reviews tend to express a brash and satirical, but seemingly honest and objective writing style.[4] He received a lot of attention for his rave review of the Broadway revival Grease, which was generally panned elsewhere. Though not acknowledged, he is rumored to have a distaste for avant-garde theater and a fondness for traditional musical theater.

He also offers audio podcasts, theater interviews and a weekly theater column.[5] Recent interviews have included actress Mara Davi, playwright David Greenspan, playwright Paul Rudnick, actress Andrea McArdle, and composer William Finn.

He invites his readers to email to him any relevant theater tips at MattWindman@aol.com.

Windman received his Bachelors degree in Journalism and Dramatic Literature from New York University. He is now a Law Review student at New York Law School and is expected to receive his JD in May 2009. He is working at the Kings County District Attorney in summer 2008.

Windman grew up in Marlboro, NJ and attended French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts in Hancock, NY, where he performed in musicals such as 1776, Biloxi Blues, Lost in Yonkers, Fiorello! and Follies. He now lives in the East Village in New York City.
