Matt Tinney

Matt Tinney joined Perth’s Nine News team in February 2008 as a reporter and weekend newsreader.

Matt began his reporting career at WIN Television’s national headquarters in Wollongong in 2005.

He joined WIN News after completing a Bachelor of Arts (Political Science and Italian) at the University of Melbourne, including an internship with the Victorian Parliament.

While studying, Melbourne-born Matt made his mark in community television and radio at Channel 31 and SYN FM. For three years, he presented and reported on news, current affairs, and entertainment programs, broadcast across the nation, and received numerous awards for his coverage.

In December 2005, Matt came to the attention of WIN Television in Wollongong, and joined the news team as a reporter. He became the politics reporter and was at the forefront of political reporting in the region breaking stories and covering local, state and federal issues including elections. Matt also presented news updates and bulletins for WIN News WA, Riverina/MIA (NSW), Central West (NSW) and Illawarra (NSW).

In February 2008, Matt moved to Western Australia joining Perth’s National Nine News team as a reporter and co-anchor of the weekend news with Sharlyn Sarac. Since arriving he’s covered crime, politics, court, health and human interest stories.

Matt has a passion for people and has interviewed diverse figures including David Hick’s military defence lawyer, singer Natalie Bassingthwaighte, and a former head of the Ku Klux Klan.

In addition to experiencing the best Western Australia has to offer, Matt enjoys all things Italian, keeping fit, playing the piano and catching up with family and friends.
